My reflection on year one of my heritage-focused public engagement project with Ralph Wilson Park Conservancy is up! To end the year, I dove into the purpose of this project, the value of using the lens of heritage, and the challenges to a three time frame approach where past, present, and future can create synergy around a community space. https://lnkd.in/gMnCYX-4

Champion of science, sustainability and climate action. Global leader in marine strategic advice, research and capacity building. BCorp business. Individual ecological footprint of 1.9 planets
The vast majority of people care about the Great Barrier Reef. Surveys showed 86% of Australians were proud that the Great Barrier Reef is a World Heritage Area, and most agreed that it was the responsibility of all Australians to protect it (81%) (JCU 2016). Did you know people are generally more philanthropic toward the end of their lives, when they tend to have more savings, time, and motivation to help others. (Giving peaks at ages 61-75, when 77 percent of households donate, compared to just over 60 percent among households headed by someone 26-45 years old.). A smart move is to share with peak individuals Jonathan Womersley John Tanzer Lachlan Wilkinson Patrice Brown Paul Hardisty Ove Hoegh-Guldberg Bill Haylock Simon Molesworth AO, KC Tor Hundloe Russell Reichelt and encouraging them to make a gift and encourage others. JCU 2016 Survey shows Aussies’ love and concern for their Great Barrier Reef https://lnkd.in/gZDHRncP. DAY 6- the final individual action is to 'Give time and money to things you care about' with Paul Hardisty. We support MOUA / Museum of Underwater Art, Australian Marine Conservation Society, Reef Check Australia, Great Barrier Reef Foundation, iNaturalist, Citizens of the Reef, Reef Restoration Foundation, Australian Citizen Science Association, MangroveWatch, Reef Life Survey, Australian Rural Leadership Foundation and many other NFPs and social enterprises that are helping with time and money through collaborations and projects because we care. Today I ask these organisations who they support and who supports them how to show the importance linkages of community, business and our planet.

Mt. Elbert in Sept 2023. Some ask why we summit Mt. Elbert when it takes 3 days and 50+ volunteers to serve 1 individual. It often comes into question if it is worth it when we could serve so many more in that timeframe with that team. Mt. Elbert is more than a single experience. It is symbolic of everything we are building together. It is emblematic of the glass ceiling we will continue to shatter as a community. We are the change, and if we can do this on Mt. Elbert year and year, and it becomes normal instead of "impossible", then every trail in every community can become adaptable through community strength. We can create something more inclusive and equitable in the mountains. For the record, we did create 110 other "impossible" trail experiences in 2023 :)

Reposting this for 2 reasons: 1) If you love the Sierra Nevada🏔️, it’s important to know how much good work is happening to conserve this globally unique mountain range. Thanks to Sierra Nevada Conservancy and so many others.🙌🏽 2) This is a great way to share progress!💡The story map is short, clear and to-the-point. A great example of moving beyond long pages of reports. Kudos Sierra Nevada Conservancy!
At our 20-year mark, the Sierra Nevada Conservancy shares this Impact Report to reflect on and celebrate the important & inspiring work by many people and partnerships (thank you!) throughout the Sierra-Cascade region. More to do! https://lnkd.in/g63cE7kZ

I want to share the news of another NSF awarded to us: Place-Based, Human-Centered Networks to Enhance Community Resilience and Equity. Collaborating with my Co-PI Katherine Idziorek, PhD, AICP and Stephen Wong, Ph.D. https://lnkd.in/gzDhZ2NV In this project, we will investigate the opportunities and challenges of implementing micro-mobility and resilience hubs in both a metropolitan coastal city (Seattle) and an inland suburban community (Stillwater, Oklahoma). We anticipate that the outcomes will endorse the use of micro-mobility to enhance social network connectivity, boost community cohesion and capacity, and strengthen both community and national resilience.

When you step outside, do you feel grateful for the space and it's accessibility? Or are you one of the 100 million Americans that lack access to a quality local park? Yes, 100 million Americans lack access to a quality local park. The Outdoors for All Act, a bipartisan bill in both the House and Senate, would ensure that the Outdoor Recreation Legacy Partnership program has steady funding for generations to come. What does that mean for park access? This program awards grant funding through the Land and Water Conservation Fund, supporting the development of new parks and the renovation of existing outdoor recreation infrastructure in underinvested urban communities. Help to bring quality parks to ALL Americans, take action now ⏬ https://lnkd.in/eQ5sQRrx
