What challenges do we need to tackle when integrating renewables into the distribution grid? Paul Micallef and Oliver Franz give their answers 👇 ❌ 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: we need to invest in the grid not only to build new lines, replace outdated equipment and digitalise, but also unlock those flexibility resources that can ease congestion. 📋 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: at present, it takes up to seven years to build a new 110kV line - sometimes even longer! “OK everybody that’s a wrap” - part three and end of our little quiz. Thanks to all of you for bearing with us and again to Paul Micallef for joining in and Eurelectric for having us play it. To borrow yet another famous line from popular culture: to cope with increasing congestions in the grid we need to “MIND THE GAP”⚠️ In quite a few member states there is a growing wedge/gap between RES development plus demand electrification on the one side and grid expansion on the other (e.g., the Netherlands https://lnkd.in/gJQDUQxD but in other regions too). While it is certainly a welcome development that a solar park might take only 3️⃣ years to complete and network operators will try their utmost also have it connected to the grid asap, it might take 7️⃣ years or even longer to create additional capacity e.g., in the high voltage grid (110 kV in Germany). But that additional capacity might well be the difference between having a grid connection and full system integration. So you might also say that what Europe needs to do is to “permit itself out of the current backlogs” but of course in a sensible manner that is mindful of the environment too to make the #energytranistion an overall success.

We can expect higher #emissions if we *don't* double the size of the energy grid? A detailed, exhaustive, but ultimately misguided report from Zero Carbon Capital. There are a lot of very clever numbers in your research but they are effectively #greenwashing. You are trying to make a case for *doubling* the global energy grid which includes conservatively "80 million km of new lines". Where do these lines come from? Steel, copper, and plastics provided generously by the fossil fuel industry and the mining industry. Just the mining of all of that raw material will result in and order of magnitude larger destruction — and human exploitation — than we've seen thus far. When you include the industrial production and transportation the mind boggles at the numbers and the destruction. What will they power? EVs and batteries. Provided generously by the fossil fuel industry and the mining industry. Produced largely by means of physical and sexual exploitation and modern slavery. But that's ok because its "a big market for the taking" and "a huge opportunity for investment". And when the grids have doubled, what will the original half be used for? If history has taught us anything is that it will still be used to supply fossil-fuel generated electricity. Because so far, all the "net zero investing" we have seen, has not displaced one single drop of oil or gas. Not. A. Single. Drop. The problem is the demand not the grid.

We’re not going to meet the incredible demand for power by doing more of the same. We’re going to need innovative solutions to get around grid bottlenecks. AES has been focused on overcoming these bottlenecks by using Dynamic Line Rating and energy storage as transmission, aka 'Grid Boosters'. Great to see AES emphasizing the urgency of deployment of these technologies at the WH/DOE summit on grid modernization yesterday.
