WTS Philadelphia is one of the most vibrant chapters in an international organization linking more than 40,000 transportation professionals! WTS International, originally named Women’s Transportation Seminar, launched in 1977. Women were largely discouraged from participating in professional associations – unless the activities were deemed educational. So a group of pioneers whipped up a plan to escape the office – typically during lunch – under the guise of attending a seminar. The goal: to advance women who worked in all levels of transportation, as well as the very industry itself. Sure, there was a learning component… but there was an even greater emphasis on forging connections. WTS Philadelphia emerged two years later on June 21, 1979. Thank you to our founding members, sponsors, supporters, and most importantly to the volunteer board (past & present) who have helped shape our chapter into what it is today! #advancingwomen #advancingtransportation #wtsphilly45in45 #45thAnniversary

As this is currently a tough economy for startups, I’ve been wondering how this has impacted female founders who already find it harder to raise money? My fear is - based on many of the stories I’ve heard from female founders over the years - it won’t be a pretty picture out there. Which is a depressing thought for a Monday. 🫣 However, it is good to know there are grants and support available out there, specifically for women in tech….👇🏻 #womenintech #femalefounders #diverseinvestment #vcfunding #startupfundinh

We shouldn’t need a theme for International Women’s Day to encourage our workplaces and society to ‘Invest in Women’. It should be embedded in every industry to see the value that we bring to our work and see the contribution to the success of the organisations we work passionately for. The communities we live in, actively contributing and participating to the fabric of its success, the clubs we belong to and life we work hard for. The families we care for, relationships we nurture and place our hopes for the future in. So lets not just focus on the topic for only today- lets make a real commitment to invest in women. It’s worth it. WE are worth it.

Empowering women in data and digital roles to have it all without having to DO it all | Career & Leadership Coach | Trainer | Data Consultant
Today I have been approached by two different organisations about speaking opportunities at conferences in 2024. Both conferences are focused on empowering women. How exciting - I'm over the moon - I haven't been actively seeking speaking engagements, yet, so this is brilliant news. Then I looked at the fine print ... "to speak at our conference will cost £XXX.XX" for the basic speaker package. Plus travel and accommodation expenses. We're not talking about jumping on the train to London. The travel expenses will be significant. Not only are they asking me to pay to speak at the conference, they are also charging delegates to attend (I've paid thousands of pounds of the years to be a delegate at a conference - I've no issue with that). This is not empowering women ... this is profiteering. So no, as much as I'd love to speak at conferences about empowering women, I won't be paying to do it ... because that's disempowering this woman. #careercoachingforwomen #empoweringwomen #leadershipcoachingforwomen

International Women’s Day can be a time for many things; a moment of celebration for the hard-fought runs on the board, while also a focusing of the lens as to progress that is still to come. In considering this year’s IWD theme - Count Her In: Invest in Women. Accelerate Progress – we reflected on where we have contributed to investment and acceleration, and what that looks like for us, into the future. As an organisation, we swing the pendulum in favour of women – within our team of staff, our Board and amongst our participants. This can beg the question of what that means for women in community leadership, particularly in volunteer roles; on the one hand, it could mean that we’re asking more of women again. More time, more unpaid labour, more challenges to navigate in a world that has historically not been designed to benefit women. But on the other hand, it suggests that more women can access opportunities to increase their capacity, to sit at whatever table they’re interested in and have their voices and views heard, and they’re supported along the way to do so – juggling the competing priorities of time, effort and energy. That they’re being counted in, and they’re being invested in. Is there still more to be done? Yes, always. But at the heart of it, we’re really proud of the vast number of women involved in our organisation, and in the broader efforts of community-led initiatives across the region. That despite the hurdles, women keep treading well-worn pathways, and carving out new ones, too. Not only to benefit themselves, but for the many. And through every mechanism available to us, as an organisation we remain committed to providing these equitable and accessible opportunities well into the future.

Women & Companies call me to help them reach their highest potential. Changing the narrative for women, everywhere.
This will likely be an unpopular post 😮💨 but here goes… If you’re only NOW thinking about International Women’s Day… didn’t have anything planned and are scrambling to put something together for your staff… You must ask yourself if empowering women is simply a tick box item or if it’s truly important to you. Some common concerns around IWD is its another event women have to plan and attend - often outside of work hours. Who at your company is organizing it? Some organizations are skipping it all together and giving the women they work with the day off, or hosting a lunch for staff instead of putting off an event. People are celebrating IWD the way they feel is right for their organization. But one thing is for sure… forgetting about it is an indication of where women stand for you and your organization. One thing we don’t want is for it to just become another tick box item without real celebration of women and their contributions. What is your organization doing to mark the day?
