Aecon awarded contract for the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension Elevated Guideway

Earlier this month, Aecon announced that it had been awarded a $290 million design-build contract by the Ontario government for the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension (ECWE) project’s Elevated Guideway in Toronto. The scope of work includes the design and construction of a 1.5-kilometre elevated guideway that will run along the north side of Eglinton Avenue West, from just east of Jane Street to just west of Scarlett Road.

Construction is expected to start in early 2024, with Aecon subcontracting certain early works to Aecon Six Nations (A6N), a successful Indigenous-owned and operated general partnership between Six Nations of the Grand River Development Corporation and Aecon.

"Building on Aecon’s experience executing some of the most complex transit projects in Ontario’s history, we look forward to successfully executing this project while supporting our client in working collaboratively with local and Indigenous communities,” said Jean-Louis Servranckx, President and Chief Executive Officer, Aecon Group Inc.

Aecon awarded contract for replacement of condensers and feedwater heaters at Dominion Energy’s North Anna Power Station

Aecon was also recently awarded a US$200 million contract by Dominion Energy for the replacement of Condensers and Feedwater Heaters at the North Anna Power Station in Mineral, Virginia.

The scope of work includes planning, design and the replacement of condenser tube bundles and the 5th and 6th point feedwater heaters at the North Anna Power Station. Planning is expected to commence in the first quarter of 2024, with completion of the project anticipated in the second quarter of 2027. The North Anna Power Station produces 17% of Virginia’s electricity and supplies power to over 450,000 homes through the operation of two units.

“Building on Aecon’s strong roster of nuclear projects, this contract award demonstrates our continued growth in the U.S. and our ability to support key clients on projects linked to the energy transition,” said Thomas Clochard, Executive Vice President, Nuclear & Civil, Aecon Group Inc. “Our nuclear team in the U.S. is strategically focused on harnessing the opportunities in the commercial nuclear market and is well positioned to support our valued clients on subsequent license renewal projects and nuclear life extension programs.”

Aecon’s Voltage Power team completes transmission line replacement on OPG’s Sir Adam Beck II Generating Station project

Aecon’s Voltage Power team has successfully completed an important transmission line replacement on Ontario Power Generation’s (OPG’s) Sir Adam Beck II Generating Station project in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Through the replacement of a string of 230,000-volt power lines spanning five transmission towers, the newly refurbished towers will continue to deliver clean and reliable power to help meet Ontario’s growing electricity needs.

The project commenced in late September 2023 and is proud to have reached completion ahead of schedule this past month. In total, 50 highly skilled workers ranging from line workers to painters and scaffolders were involved in the project – a testament to the diverse service offering of the Voltage Power team.

Safety First is Aecon’s number one core value and this project was no exception for the team, especially when working on top of 130-foot towers and over 300 feet above the river. Workers used boom lifts, cranes, and suspended ladders as they built scaffolding over the station’s penstocks, painted the transmission towers, and replaced insulators and power lines that had reached the end of their service life.

"Demand for electricity in Ontario is forecasted to double in the next 25 years, so the reliable production of energy is vital from an infrastructure perspective,” says Steve Jeffery, Director of Operations, Voltage Power. “This project aligns with our focus on building infrastructure that minimizes waste, GHG emissions and other environmental impacts, and we were proud to play a part in ensuring this asset will continue to provide clean, reliable power to Ontario for generations to come.”

With the project completed on schedule and on budget, the newly refurbished towers are continuing to safely and reliably deliver power generated by the generating station to Ontario’s electricity grid. The 16-unit facility can produce up to 1,600 megawatts of electricity – enough to power about 1.5 million homes.

Hats off to Aecon’s Voltage Power team for their successful completion of this clean power project.

Happy Holidays!

Thank you to our employees, partners, clients, and community partners who are working together to build a sustainable future and improve communities.

We look forward to publishing more editions of ARE in 2024!
