OIL AND GAS NEWS
bp begins oil production from major new platform offshore Azerbaijan
bp , as operator of the Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli (ACG) project, today announced the start-up of oil production from the new Azeri Central East (ACE) platform as part of the ACG field development in the Azerbaijan sector of the Caspian Sea.
The ACE platform is the seventh oil producing platform installed on the giant ACG field in the Caspian Sea. ACG first began production in 1997 and has since produced over 4.3 billion barrels of oil. The bp-operated Shah Deniz gas field has two further platforms in the Caspian.
The ACE platform and related facilities are designed to process up to 100,000 barrels of oil per day (bpd) and the project is expected to produce up to 300 million barrels over its lifetime. Oil will pass through the processing facilities on the platform and then be exported around 130 kilometres to the onshore Sangachal terminal via a new in-field pipeline linked to an existing 30-inch subsea export line.
Ewan Drummond, bp’s senior vice president, projects, said: “I’m incredibly proud of the team at bp for safely delivering the first bp-operated offshore platform fully controlled from onshore. This establishes a new benchmark for innovative engineering and competitive project delivery for our company and the wider industry.”

Germany’s Oil and Gas Production Continues to Drop
German oil and gas production fell again in 2023 compared to 2022, industry association BVEG said on Tuesday, calling for increased domestic production to reduce dependence on more emissions-generating LNG imports.
Last year, Germany’s oil production dropped by 5.9% year-over-year, while natural gas output slumped by 10.4%.
The share of domestic gas supply of total German supply was 5.7%, while domestic oil production met about 2.2% of Germany’s oil consumption in 2023, figures by BVEG showed
Germany’s oil and gas production peaked in the 1960s and 1990s, respectively. Output has been falling in recent decades, increasing the share of imports to meet demand.

RENEWABLE ENERGY NEWS
Seven countries now generate 100% of their electricity from renewable energy
Scientists say we have reached an ‘irreversible tipping point’ that will see fossil fuels phased out.
Albania, Bhutan, Nepal, Paraguay, Iceland, Ethiopia and the Democratic Republic of Congo produced more than 99.7 per cent of the electricity they consumed using geothermal, hydro, solar or wind power.
Data from the International Energy Agency (IEA) and International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) also revealed that a further 40 countries generated at least 50 per cent of the electricity they consumed from renewable energy technologies in 2021 and 2022 – including 11 European countries.
“We don’t need miracle technologies,” said Stanford University Mark Jacobson , who published the data.
“We need to stop emissions by electrifying everything and providing the electricity with Wind, Water and Solar (WWS), which includes onshore wind, solar photovoltaics, concentrated solar power, geothermal electricity, small hydroelectricity, and large hydroelectricity.”

Study identifies where wind is most reliable for generating power
Where in the world does the wind most reliably blow, and where is it fickle in nature? About 6.5% of the world’s electricity is now generated by wind, and by 2050 this could rise to more than a third. Knowing where the steadiest winds are to be found is crucial for keeping the lights on. A new study has identified the locations that are prone to “wind droughts” and those areas that are reliably windy.
Enrico Antonini , from the Observatories of The Carnegie Institution for Science in Stanford, US, and colleagues analysed global climate data dating back to 1979, calculating wind power, seasonal and weather variability in each region. Their results, published in Nature, found that north-west Europe had high wind power capacity, but was also prone to wind droughts, such as the long period of low wind speed that occurred through the summer and autumn of 2021, which strained the European electricity system.
More steady and reliable locations included the American midwest, Australia, the Sahara, Argentina, central Asia and South Africa. Currently the potential wind power across these African and Asian regions is largely untapped.
However, droughts needn’t be a death knell for wind power. Instead, locations such as north-west Europe need to build resilience into the system by diversifying the power supply mix, creating grid interconnections over long distances and building energy storage.

NUCLEAR & POWER NEWS
China Is Leading the Global Nuclear Power Build Out
China is currently constructing a total of 26 nuclear power units with a combined capacity of 30.3 gigawatts (GW), the highest in the world, according to a report by the China Nuclear Energy Association (CNEA) cited by local media.
Last year, China approved the development of five new nuclear power projects and began construction of five units, the report found.
Air pollution from coal-fired power plants is a major impetus for China to expand its nuclear generation fleet, according to the World Nuclear Association.
China is not giving up coal, but it is betting on nuclear, too, to meet its rising power demand with cleaner energy sources.
Many countries in the West, with the notable exception of Germany, have also recognized that nuclear power generation would help them achieve net-zero emission goals.
At the COP28 climate summit in Dubai at the end of last year, the United States and 21 other countries pledged to triple nuclear energy capacity by 2050, saying incorporating more nuclear power in their energy mix is critical for achieving their net zero goals in the coming decades.
The United States, alongside Britain, France, Canada, Sweden, South Korea, Ghana, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), among others, signed the declaration at the COP28 climate summit.
China is not a signatory to that declaration, but it aims to develop more nuclear energy capacities to reduce emissions as its demand for electricity rises.

EV and BATTERY NEWS
Tesla laying off more than 10% of staff globally as sales fall
Tesla is laying off more than 10% of its global workforce, an internal memo seen by Reuters on Monday shows, as it grapples with falling sales and an intensifying price war for electric vehicles (EVs).
"About every five years, we need to reorganize and streamline the company for the next phase of growth," CEO Elon Musk commented in a post on X. Two senior leaders, battery development chief Drew Baglino and vice president for public policy Rohan Patel tesla, also announced their departures, drawing posts of thanks from Musk although some investors were concerned.
Musk last announced a round of job cuts in 2022, after telling executives he had a "super bad feeling" about the economy. Still, Tesla headcount has risen from around 100,000 in late 2021 to over 140,000 in late 2023, according to filings with U.S. regulators.
Baglino was a Tesla veteran and one of four members, along with Musk, of the leadership team listed on the company's investor relations website.
