OIL AND GAS NEWS
Russia Discovers Massive Oil and Gas Reserves in British Antarctic Territory
Russia has found huge oil and gas reserves in British Antarctic territory, potentially leading to drilling in the protected region.
The reserves uncovered contain around 511bn barrels worth of oil, equating to around 10 times the North Sea’s output over the last 50 years.
The discovery, per Russian research ships, was revealed in evidence submitted to the Commons Environment Audit Committee last week. The committee was assessing questions regarding oil and gas research on ships owned by the Kremlin’s Rosgeo, the largest geological exploration company in Russia.
Antarctica is currently protected by the 1959 Antarctic Treaty, which prohibits all oil developments in the area.

Qatar to double LNG production in next few years
QatarEnergy is pushing the envelope of LNG development by continuing to tap into its gas reserves. To this end, the firm added another expansion project to its arsenal at the North Field.
As a result, the North Field East (NFE) and the North Field South (NFS) undertakings are being joined by the North Field West (NFW) project, which is expected to scale up the country’s LNG production capacity by almost 85% from current production levels by 2030.
Saad sherida Al-kaabi , Qatar’s Minister of State for Energy Affairs, President and CEO of QatarEnergy , has confirmed that Qatar’s LNG expansion projects are moving ahead on track towards an increased production capacity of 142 million tons per annum, adding that “with 18 million tons per annum coming from our LNG project in Texas, Qatar will be doubling its LNG production capacity in the next few years.”

RENEWABLE ENERGY NEWS
Cold, still and overcast: can Europe’s renewables cope with Dunkelflaute?
As wind turbines and solar farms are rolled out at pace, policymakers and energy experts are also focusing on another piece of the puzzle: working out how to fill the energy gap during periods of low wind and little sunlight — or Dunkelflaute, as they are known in energy circles, using the German term.
Analysis by the International Energy Agency shows that roughly five or six times over the past 30 years, cold spells with little wind have affected large parts of Europe for a week or more, including areas where most onshore and offshore wind projects are located. The analysis covered the EU, UK, Nordic countries, several Balkan countries and Ukraine.
“We recognise that climates are changing, so how often these will occur is a bit hard to know,” says Brent Wanner , head of the power sector unit at the International Energy Agency (IEA) , which advises member nations on energy security. “But being ready for these kinds of periods should be part of the planning.”
There is “no need to fear Dunkelflaute”, provided the continent’s power system is set up appropriately, this will not happen by itself.
“The question is: do we have the right things on the policy and administrative level to get there?” he asks. “I would say at European level the homework is mostly done. It’s about making it concrete, in the regional context.”

Germany solar power output jumps to record highs
Solar farms produced over 60% of Germany's electricity for several hours a day over the past week as bright sunshine combined with new solar generation capacity helped accelerate the country's energy transition away from fossil fuels.
During the week to May 13, Germany's solar farms produced 17,531 megawatt hours (MWh) of electricity, according to data from LSEG, 40% more than the week before and nearly 50% more than the long-term average for that particular week.
At 1 p.m. in Germany on May 13, solar assets produced 43.8 gigawatts (GW) of the 72.4 GW of electricity generated in Germany at that time, according to electricitymaps.com.
That means that solar accounted for nearly two-thirds of Germany's total electricity output during that hour, vastly exceeding output from all other sources including 17% from wind farms and a combined 12% from coal and natural gas plants.

NUCLEAR & POWER NEWS
EU rebuffs UK attempt to continue collaborating on nuclear fusion experiment
The UK’s attempt to continue collaborating in the world’s largest nuclear fusion experiment has been rebuffed by the EU, which wants Britain to rejoin its civil atomic programme as part of the deal.
Brussels has told London it will be locked out of the Iter project, based in France, within months unless it affiliates to Euratom, which it quit when it left the bloc, according to people familiar with the matter.
The UK has asked to continue with Iter as an outside partner, an arrangement granted to Australia. But the EU has said it must also join a Euratom research scheme, the people said. Australia has a co-operation agreement with Euratom.
London left Euratom because it did not believe the programme provided value for money, and stayed out when it rejoined other EU research schemes last year.
Iter is an international project to build the world’s biggest tokamak — the reaction vessel for nuclear fusion. After four decades of experiments the technology is still years away from proving it can generate commercially viable power, but supporters hope it will prove a viable source of plentiful low-carbon energy.
Apart from the EU, Iter’s members are China, India, Japan, South Korea, Russia and the US.
A crunch point between the EU and UK has come because contracts with Iter for dozens of UK scientists that continued after Brexit come to an end in August. These cannot be extended beyond that point, according to two people familiar with the situation.
“The UK participated in Iter as part of Euratom and it should do so on that basis if it wants to remain involved,” said an EU official. A second official said there should be no “cherry picking” of EU programmes.

EV & BATTERY NEWS
European ports turned into car parks as EV makers hunt buyers
A growing number of imported electric cars, many of them from China, are stuck at the ports of Europe as manufacturers and distributors struggle with a slowdown in sales.
The ports of Antwerp and Zeebrugge in Belgium are reportedly flooded with EVs from China, however, the port told Euronews that it is not only Chinese vehicles which are involved. But they did not disclose any other exporter countries contributing to the problem.
However, Le Monde reported that at Calloo, near Antwerp, and Zeebrugge, the huge parking lots to accommodate 130,000 freshly shipped vehicles, are cramped now with Chinese models, including MG, BYD, Nio, XPeng, Lynk & Co, Omoda, Hongqi, among others.
Chinese EVs are targeted to benefit from European market trends, including state aid in several countries which aims to encourage buyers to opt for electric vehicles.
While European efforts are aiming at supporting their car manufacturing industry, vehicle exports to the continent from China are still flooding in, and reached 1.3 million in the first quarter of this year, up 33% compared to a year ago, according to the Association of European Vehicle Logistics (ECG), with a large majority being EVs.
The top European destination for Chinese carmakers was Belgium in February, where reportedly the EVs are piling up spectacularly, turning the ports into car parks.
"This is what is happening in all European ports that handle large numbers of cars," said a spokesperson on behalf of the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, the second largest port in Europe.
