CLF is often asked by founders how exactly athletes, entertainers, or executives can be a game-changing asset for their companies. On the flip side, cultural leaders also ask what they should expect when investing in tech startups and working with founders. We've seen firsthand that these partnerships can produce new ideas, new opportunities, and new shifts in culture faster than operating in silos. Dig into some of the most important must-knows and to-dos for building together! ✍: Megan Holston-Alexander, Derek Dolin, Deborah Embaie, MPA https://lnkd.in/gjQbMyCE

Connecting the greatest cultural leaders with innovative tech companies and advancing Black talent into technology.
About us
The Cultural Leadership Fund (CLF) is Silicon Valley’s first venture capital fund consisting exclusively of Black cultural leaders and organizations committed to Black wealth generation. CLF coinvests in a16z portfolio companies across industries including consumer, crypto, enterprise, fintech, games, and bio + health. All of CLF’s management fees and carry generated are donated to nonprofit organizations and initiatives working to actively engage and advance more Black talent into technology roles. CLF is working to facilitate two major shifts: more Black dollars on the cap tables of the world’s best companies and Black talent embedded into technology companies at the earliest stages. We believe these shifts will have a meaningful impact on building generational wealth for Black communities.

As a new art collector, I started by appreciating beautiful pieces from afar and learning more about different mediums - oil on canvas, clay, digital, etc. Over the years, I fell in love with some pieces I connected with, regardless of their value. I believe that this is what art SHOULD be - accessible, personal, appreciated, and shared. I'm super excited to be a cohost of this event next month in Marfa, TX, with my good friend, Ismail Tazi S! When we (Shondra Washington, Megan Holston-Alexander, Judene Small Jean-Louis, Lance Davis, and myself) started the Black Digital Art Collective, we wanted to focus on collecting dope Black art, highlighting and showcasing our artists, as well as introducing more artists to digital mediums like NFTs. This opportunity to collaborate with TRAME Paris and Ledger is a full circle for me as I have several of their pieces in my home, as I am trying to incorporate art into more parts of my life - from wall decor to diningware. If you're in Marfa next month for Art Blocks Inc. Marfa Weekend, pull up! Register here: https://lu.ma/cq8rz8c7 (some of my favorite TRAME Paris pieces are below, along with the first piece of art I had commissioned by Camille Elyse Jones, PhD, MPH!)

After 3 years of learning how to make a game, I’m so proud to reveal Pahdo Labs's debut game, Starlight Re:Volver! I had 0 game dev experience in 2021 as a solo founder. 3 Lessons for Starting Your Own Game Studio from Scratch: - Assume your game will take 4 years to make. Make technical and hiring decisions accordingly. - Bring people that you’d want to work with for the long haul, not just those with relevant experience. - Relevant experience matters. Find a few people who’ve worked in your exact genre and style before. I’m grateful to have had Mar Hershenson, Kevin Hartz, Gregory R., Cyan Banister, and Don Stalter bet on me early. And thank you to Josh Elman, Trae Stephens and Jeremy Cai for encouraging me to get started. Anime MMOs like MapleStory, Trickster Online, and Dragon Nest shaped my childhood. With the recent breakout growth of the Anime RPG genre, Starlight Re:Volver is our unique answer to that. https://lnkd.in/e26My8u9

It was an honor for CLF to participate in the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation 53rd Annual Legislative Conference this week. Thank you Senator Laphonza Butler for convening a discussion that explored the role AI can play in driving economic empowerment for Black communities. Megan Holston-Alexander, DeVaris Brown, and Tyrance Billingsley II shared perspectives on the potential for this innovation to open new markets, make entrepreneurship more accessible, and create opportunities for wealth creation. We are in the early days of gen AI and Black voices and contributions are critical in shaping this future!

Be prepared to spend time building meaningful connections within the tech industry and honing their personal and professional influence to elevate and support future investments.
