According to WWF, we've lost 20% of the Brazilian Amazon since the 1970s. Yet we're optimistic that a sustainable future for this critical ecosystem is within reach. 🌳 Our new report with USAID Climate Finance for Development Accelerator (USAID CFDA) reveals untapped opportunities in the Amazon's bioeconomy - and how strategic investment can drive both returns and regeneration. Key investment gaps for nature-based businesses: 🔺Smaller deal sizes, particularly those below US$1M, face significant challenges in securing capital 🔺Intermediate ticket sizes between US$5-10M struggle to secure flexible debt or equity, as larger impact funds prefer bigger deals to justify transaction costs 🔺The market needs fit-for-purpose credit enhancement and risk mitigation tools. The majority of businesses – big and small – often lack the collateral required by most lenders, limiting their ability to access financing Innovative financial structures like donor-backed credit guarantees and first-loss capital tranches can help unlock private investment to scale nature-based businesses in the Amazon. Read the full report for a comprehensive investment landscape and recommendations: https://lnkd.in/d9uFag8z Together, we can accelerate investment that benefits people and the planet. #AmazonBioeconomy #ImpactInvesting #NatureFinance Marília dos Reis Martins, Loïc Porte & Jonathan Duarte

As the world races to decarbonize, hydropower offers a proven solution for clean, dispatchable energy storage - yet remains chronically underfunded. Its unique ability to provide long-duration storage and flexible power generation makes it essential for integrating low-cost wind and solar at scale. However, despite these critical advantages, hydropower faces a significant funding gap. Traditional financing through government budgets is increasingly constrained, while high upfront costs have deterred many private investors from entering the sector. Our latest whitepaper reveals financing solutions to mobilize private capital into hydropower at scale by leveraging capital markets. I was grateful to have been invited to the #MitigationWorkProgram as a member of the Financial Advisory Panel for the Pitch Hub - "From Concept to Finance: Preparation and Planning" during the fourth #investment-focused event, in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt earlier this month. The #MWP was established in 2021 and operationalized in 2022 during COP 27 in Egypt, to scale up climate mitigation activities, with the mandate to hold at least two global dialogues and investment-focused events every year. The Pitch Hub provided interested Parties with the opportunity to share project ideas with investors, financial institutions, and other policymakers to facilitate investment in project preparation. As a Financial Advisory Panelist, I had the chance to review and provide feedback to a range of exciting proposals by various countries that were shortlisted by the program. The proposals included: 🐂 organic #waste treatment in the Gambia 🚢 #port electrification project in Mauritius ☀🌽Agro-#solar project in Armenia 🚗 green #transport project in Bhutan Some key common recommendations for participants of the pitch hub included: 💵 Ensuring a clear and viable business model, a strong project sponsor, and driving projects towards self-sustainability by taking advantage of income generating opportunities in projects, where possible 🤝 Leveraging public-private-partnerships to be able to share the risk and return of projects with the private sector and to be able to leverage the strengths and expertise of both the public and the private sector 💰 Ensuring that grant funding is only requested and used for highly impactful activities, and ones that cannot mobilize private capital, and prioritizing #blendedfinance solutions, given the limited availability of grant funding Congratulations to the co-chairs Dr. Amr Osama Abdel-Aziz and Lola Vallejo for hosting a great 2-day event and a big thank you for the invitation, and to our Pitch Hub facilitator Ana Vukoje for running a seamless process. Excited to continue the dialogue and work with several key stakeholders at #COP29 in #Baku later this year, alongside my colleagues Nandini Chaudhury and Kate Wharton. Please do reach out if you plan to be there and we would be happy to connect! #climatechange #energytransition #UNFCCC CrossBoundary Advisory

In the Caribbean, marine and coastal ecosystems generate billions annually through tourism alone while supporting critical local livelihoods and regional economic development. However, pollution, waste generation, and unsustainable fishing practices are threatening these vital natural assets and their economic potential. CrossBoundary is proud to be working alongside the Pan American Development Foundation to support USAID's Caribbean Sustainable Ecosystems Activity. We recently attended the program’s launch in the Dominican Republic 🇩🇲 and Jamaica 🇯🇲. Initially, we are providing support to the program in two key areas: 1. Pipeline development of investable opportunities 2. Creation of innovative blended financing structures The program targets three strategic objectives with clear investment potential: ✅ Marine-protected area management optimization ✅ Commercial-scale waste management solutions ✅ Sustainable fisheries development At the launch event in Jamaica, Jamie McInerney, our Head of Caribbean Advisory, presented our investment framework for sustainable marine initiatives: ➡ Tier 1 - Quick wins: Actions that companies or private enterprises can take with a clear, short-term return on investment, such as eliminating single-use plastics or transitioning to solar power ➡ Tier 2 - Long-term ROI: Actions that could result in long-term return on investment for an enterprise but require access to capital and technical assistance, like building anaerobic digesters to turn food waste into energy ➡ Tier 3 - Blended finance: Actions that need capital and expertise but don't generate a clear financial return on investment, such as mangrove restoration, which benefits tourism and biodiversity in the long term. Blended finance plays an essential role in this tier to motivate long-term thinking of private enterprises and improve the profitability of these investments Looking to explore investment opportunities in the Caribbean's Blue Economy or Climate Resilience sectors?
