Caleb Casey, a senior studying innovation in society through ASU Online, was recently highlighted in his hometown's newspaper, Colorado Hometown Weekly. Casey traveled to Hiroshima last summer with a group of Arizona State University students from the ASU College of Global Futures and Thunderbird School of Global Management. The students participated in the inaugural “Japan–U.S. Global Leadership Program in the Age of Artificial Intelligence” cohort in Japan and had the opportunity to study the impacts of AI on society. The Future is For Everyone!
About us
The influence of science, technology and innovation in how we live our lives has never been greater. Tomorrow it is likely to be greater still. Headlines that would have seemed like science fiction a few short years ago announce new technical realities. As universities prepare students for the future, at SFIS we’re making the future – or, rather, a set of plausible futures -- a focus of our teaching, research and service. We’re making innovation the object of systematic study and informed critique so that we might get what we truly want and need from our scientific and technological endeavors. At SFIS, we believe the future is for everyone.

A group of faculty and students from the School for the Future of Innovation in Society at ASU joined about 2,500 people from around the world at the Dubai Future Forum just before the new year. At the forum, thought leaders, students and experts gathered to discuss and collaborate on a vision for an interconnected, thriving and sustainable global future. “Our students learn how to translate innovation into action with public value, and the Dubai Future Forum is a natural place to see that skillset in action,” said Eusebio Scornavacca, director of the School for the Future of Innovation in Society. “Engaging with such a diverse range of voices allowed us to envision innovative pathways toward a sustainable and inclusive future.” Read more in this recent article https://lnkd.in/gbz3A-4N

Breaking news: ASU has been selected as the home and partner for a CHIPS and Science Act-funded national facility for semiconductor advanced packaging. The Department of Commerce and Natcast announced Arizona State University’s Research Park as the home for the third flagship CHIPS for America research and development facility. The facility is expected to host the world’s first 300mm front-end semiconductor manufacturing and advanced packaging research facility. Through the past two presidential administrations, and with bipartisan congressional support, U.S. leadership has made the strategic decision to return not only research and development but also manufacturing supremacy in digital electronics to the United States, where these technologies were invented and initiated. ASU President Michael Crow shared that ASU is proud to host this transformative initiative that “will take our state and our country to a new level in the advancement of digital technology.” To read more about how Arizona State University is helping shape the future of our nation’s microelectronics, read the story at the link below. https://ow.ly/oqXn50UAu1I

Through a condensed and expedited program, Shenella Benjamin and Norwell Hinds graduated this fall with PhDs in innovation in global development in only three years! The University of Guyana faculty members completed their programs from the School for the Future of Innovation in Society at ASU and the ASU Graduate College, with support from units across Arizona State University. Benjamin and Hinds were joined on this challenging and rewarding journey by four faculty members from the University of Guyana who earned master's degrees in global technology and development, five who earned graduate certificates in global development and innovation and 22 others who have earned or nearly completed PhDs in leadership and innovation from the Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College via ASU Online. Collectively, the scholars have produced more than 60 peer-reviewed research articles about Guyana in such areas as sustainable agriculture and forestry, energy, education in Indigenous communities, biodiversity and educational administration. Both Benjamin and Hinds shared how impactful of an experience studying at ASU has been. “It was a very emotional journey, and it was very informative. Coming to ASU was a transforming experience for me,” said Benjamin “It’s a very humbling thing to do — to, in a sense, learn about yourself,” said Hinds. “I learned about my own work ethic, my own work style, and more importantly, it helped with the rigor of my thoughts. And I don't think that I could have matched the experience with any other thing in my life. And I'm very happy for that.” Read more about their story in this recent ASU News article: https://lnkd.in/gYETcuhY

Creating awareness about the broader implications of new technology is critical for establishing a more sustainable and equitable future. For example, electric vehicles (EVs) have hidden costs that consumers should be aware of. Learn more about the pros and cons of EVs from Jameson Wetmore in this recent video: https://lnkd.in/giMNJ8aB
Do the functional benefits of new technology outweigh the cost of its environmental impact? Jameson Wetmore, associate professor in the School for the Future of Innovation in Society at ASU, and Kris Hartley, assistant professor in the School of Sustainability, were asked to discuss the environmental and personal impacts that technology has on consumers. "Most labor-saving devices don’t actually save labor, (they) just shift it to something new," Wetmore said. Utility, functionality and limiting the environmental impact are not always prioritized when designing new technology, especially if the goal is to increase profit margins by incentivizing product turnover. "Can producers shrink their ecological footprint at a rate that outpaces the additional product turnover they create through innovation?" Hartley said. "I'm not certain they can."
