On this National Doctor's Day, UPMC is highlighting the excellence of its physicians. Hear from our medical oncologist and hematologist Dr. Shiva Kumar R. Mukkamalla about his experience in his own words. “Since January 2024, I've had the privilege of serving as a hematologist and medical oncologist at IRMC Cancer Center, in partnership with UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, and UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, Punxsutawney Area Hospital. This role allows me to combine the intricacies of blood disorders and cancer treatment, offering a comprehensive approach to patient care. I find immense satisfaction in providing personalized treatment plans, navigating the complexities of each case, and building meaningful relationships with patients and their families within the community. The ability to offer cutting-edge therapies and compassionate support right here in Indiana and Punxsy, is incredibly rewarding. Witnessing the resilience of my patients and contributing to their well-being fuels my passion for this work. The collaborative environment at UPMC Hillman, coupled with the opportunity to make a tangible difference in the lives of local patients, makes this role exceptionally fulfilling.”

Researchers led by Costas Hadjipanayis in the University of Pittsburgh Department of Neurological Surgery and the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center have shown the promising therapeutic effects of magnetic hyperthermia therapy (MHT) in combination with chemoradiation in multiple preclinical glioblastoma brain tumor models. MHT is a newer treatment modality relying on the use of magnetic nanoparticles, 50 nanometers in size, implanted into brain tumors to generate local hyperthermia by application of an external alternating magnetic field. This is the first scientific study to provide efficacy, safety, and feasibility when MHT is combined with conventional radiation and chemotherapy against glioblastoma.
