In order to get the most out of therapy there needs to be clear, defined goals that are built out of trust between the client and the therapist. What do you want out of therapy and why? After a period of time your goals and needs as a client can change based on the progress made throughout therapy. I believe a good therapist will, "work themselves out of a job". This means that we will work towards self-sufficiency where you don't need therapy and you are the best version of yourself, no matter how long it takes. For some it might be a few sessions, and for others it might take much longer. Therapy is based on your needs!

My name is Brad Klemm, LMSW and I have been working as a Psychotherapist since 2001. I graduated from University of Michigan's School of Social Work with a Master's Degree in Clinical Social Work. I then received postgraduate training through the Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute for adult and adolescent psychotherapy. I primarily use a psychodynamic approach in my work. This means I view your current symptoms as the result of past and present issues coming together. Once we understand this interplay, you will be able to control your symptoms, rather than feeling your symptoms are controlling you.

Safe, respected, valued, and understood – these are the emotions that clients experience when they feel connected with their counselor. These emotions, which can be thought of as “principles of care,” serve as the foundation for a successful relationship. Upholding these principles is my priority. Doing so allows my clients to take brave steps into the unknown, to explore terrain that can be full of fears and frustrations, to formulate solutions where none could originally be conceived. Together, we map this landscape and learn from its features – until the time my clients feel ready to continue the journey on their own.

I am here to help you develop, tap into, and integrate creativity into your life, or assist you in balancing your creative life with the de mands of life.
You love the imagination...you love to create...yet you struggle to balance your inner life with the de mands of "the real world"...resulting in those pesky neuroses, things like anxiety or depression, that eat away at your time and energy. You may be empathic or highly sensitive. You may feel lonely or isolated. You may not feel you're living the life you want. You may have different masks that you put on for different situations or around certain people. Sometimes, you may feel it is hard being you. Just know, none of this means that something is "wrong" with you.

Throughout life, we are faced with many decisions, which can be boiled down to acting in a way that moves us forward, and acting in a way that moves us backwards.

Do you ever feel held back or even controlled by difficult thoughts or emotions? Of course you have, in fact we all have struggled with being in this space and not knowing how to move forward. One of the most difficult parts of being in this situation is going through it alone without any tools. By exploring your experiences in a safe, compassionate and non-judgemental way, we can find out what is hooking you and empower you to unhook yourself.

Male Therapists
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.
How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.
Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.
Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
