Beat the heat with Bobbie Thomas’ summer beauty essentials — starting at $4

Maintain your glow without worrying about your makeup budging.

We get it. Wearing a full face of makeup during the summer is unappealing. Foundation never seems to stay put, and our powders and creams simply don't last throughout the day. Luckily, there are solutions to maintaining your makeup while in the heat.

TODAY contributor Bobbie Thomas stopped by TODAY with Hoda and Jenna to share both affordable and splurge-worthy products that will help you beat the heat all summer long.

From practical, travel-sized beauty to transfer-proof makeup, these are the best products to create a makeup look that's perfect for hot weather. Keep reading or click the options below to see the recommended picks.

Seen on TODAY

With warm weather officially here, Thomas recommends three steps for getting the most out of your beauty routine: prep, prime and protect. Below, are the products that'll help you do just that.

Step #1: Prep the skin

Face Scrubber Silicone Cleaning Brush

Available in both handheld and brush versions, these silicone scrubbers work in tandem with your products to provide a deeper clean, further exfoliating the skin.

The brand says this 5-pack can be used by the entire family (it's good for all skin types!), and is easy to use thanks to the grip options on the back.

Elemis Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm

Thomas says summer is the perfect time to start double cleansing if you aren't already. Oil-based cleansers like this option from Elemis is optimal for removing makeup, according to Thomas.

It not only includes essential oils like lavender and eucalyptus to provide a slight scent, but it employs the use of starflower oil for healthier skin.

Fresh Soy pH-Balanced Hydrating Face Cleanser

Designed for all skin types, this cleanser boasts non-stripping qualities, promising to cleanse the pores and remove makeup without irritating the skin.

It also has hydrating qualities thanks to its active ingredient of aloe vera, which works overtime to leave the skin feeling smooth.

Neutrogena Ultra Light Face Cleansing Oil and Makeup Remover

Another oil-based cleanser to help "gently breakdown buildup," as Thomas advises, is this pick from Neutrogena. It promises to cleanse the skin while also removing stubborn makeup such as waterproof mascara.

This two-in-one product is only one step in your routine, making it easier than before to clean your face and take off makeup at the end of the day. It's even non-comedogenic, meaning it won't further clog your pores.

CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser

Thomas recommends finishing a double cleanse routine with a water-based cleanser, to further "remove residue" from the skin. While it has a beneficial ingredients list, with key ingredients of ceramides and hyaluronic acid, dermatologists (and Shop TODAY editors) both use and recommend this product because of how accessible and effective it is.

Jill Hair Identifier Spray

The hairs on your face are hard to see. Spritz a mild amount of this spray onto your face to bring them to the light, in order to dermaplane them away.

Versed At-Home Dermaplaning Tool

"Dermaplaning can help to evenly refresh your skin’s top layer," according to Thomas, rather than using scrubs or peels that might be harsh or abrasive on the skin.

This tool is used for removing hair from dull, dry skin, according to the brand, hoping to help your products seep deeper into the skin and work more effectively.

Schick Hydro Silk Dermaplaning Wand

This reusable tool comes with additional blades to switch out once the previous ones become dull. The tool itself has a weighted handle, complete with a silicone covering, to avoid accidental slips.

The blades themselves come with a micro guard, that acts as a barrier between the skin in order to provide a smoother, less irritating shave.

Stacked Skincare Dermaplaning Tool

For a splurge-worthy option that gets rid of peach fuzz and leaves your face feeling smooth, opt for this dermaplaning tool from Stacked Skincare.

While it provides the same results, its features are worth notice. The stainless steel blade promises a close shave, and is available in two different versions, one that provides a regular, basic shave and one that's designed for more precision.

Step #2: Prime the skin

The Ordinary Saccharomyces Ferment 30% Milky Toner

Thomas provides four options for primers that help to hydrate and plump the skin, starting with this pick from The Ordinary, that's also apt for those with sensitive skin. To effectively see results, the brand recommends using it during both your morning and nighttime routine.

Ilia Base Face Milk

Another option that will help to trap moisture, this face "milk" also doubles as a moisturizer, seeping into the skin with a couple of swipes and providing smooth textured skin.

Ilia calls this product the"perfect prep step," before plunging into your typical routine, saying it sits well under a cream when your skin is feeling dry, or can replace your normal moisturizer.

NYX Plump Right Back Primer

Available in two travel-size options, this product is helping you achieve all-day looks while working overtime to provide your skin with benefits.

Hyaluronic acid and vitamin E work to not only add moisture via this product but to hopefully "extend" the wear of your foundation and concealer, making it last you from the office to a night out.

Laura Geller Spackle Primer

This pint-sized product took home the award for best overall primer during Shop TODAY's 2024 Beauty Awards, earning a perfect 5/5 score in terms of value, quality and satisfaction.

"This primer is super lightweight, and it feels like moisturizer as you’re applying it (the hydration is super apparent!)," says Shop TODAY editor Amanda Fama. "It also dries instantly and provides a smooth base for your makeup. I’m a fan."

Makeup Revolution Blur & Prime Pore Blur Primer

Another pocket-sized product, that promises to deliver results for any type of skin, no matter if you're acne-prone or have mature skin, this primer from Makeup Revolution reduces the appearance of pores while providing a smoother makeup application.

Smashbox The Original Photo Finish Primer

Smashbox describes this primer as velvet to the touch, helping to diminish looks of fine lines and helping foundation to blend in better, hoping for a finish that makes your skin glow, with the help of vitamins A and E.

Chanel La Base Matifiante

Achieve luxe-looking skin with this primer that goes on as a gel, and dries as a matte, leaving you to coat makeup on afterwards with ease. The brand recommends starting at the center of your face and working your way outwards to ensure full coverage.

Tatcha Liquid Silk Canvas Featherweight Protective Primer

Whether you have combination skin, oily skin, mature skin or acne-prone skin, Tatcha recommends their lightweight primer for any and all skin types. A Japanese beauty brand, this primer's ingredient list is packed with ingredients that are most likely new to your routine, however they will bring lots of benefits to it.

Inspired by "bintsuke," which is a mixture used before applying makeup, the foundation and texture of this product provides a similar softening, smoothing look and feel.

e.l.f. Power Grip Primer

Thomas recommends this affordable product when hoping to "grip" onto makeup and hold it in place for long periods of time.

A gel-based formula, it's available in a translucent shade, going on clear and drying without notice that it's even there. e.l.f. also sells a version with added amounts of niacinamide, to further hydrate the skin.

Milk Makeup Hydro Grip Primer

Available in three different sizes (mini, full and jumbo), this primer boasts an impressive stat — promising to hold makeup for up to 12 hours.

It's mostly recommended for normal and dry skin, however, can be used by all skin types, according to the brand. Plus, it can be worn underneath makeup, or solo when wanting to achieve a dewy, natural look.

Tarte Poreless Mattifying Primer

This primer also promises to stay put (and help your makeup do the same) for up to 12 hours, while also promising to be waterproof. Hoping to be a perfect solution for oily and combination skin, the gel foundation goes on clear, yet has a big impact when erasing pores and lessening the look of acne scars.

Fenty Pro Filt'r Instant Retouch Primer

Add shine and get rid of pores with this oil-free primer, that the brand says has a "cushiony" finishing look, unlike mattifying primers that might feel a bit heavier on your skin.

It works for normal, dry, combination and oily skin, offering a lightweight feel under everyday makeup looks.

Danessa Myricks Beauty Yummy Skin Blurring Balm Powder

Thomas loves this powder primer because of its inclusive shade range, that's available in 14 different shades and undertone options. Plus, it can be worn without makeup and still provide a put-together look.

It has a creamy texture that finishes matte and works to absorb sweat and natural oils throughout the day to keep your face looking and feeling fresh.

Step #3: Protect the skin

Vacation Super Spritz SPF 50

Its nostalgic packaging and undeniable scent brings us back to family vacation days, the brand says that this face mist lays seamlessly over makeup, offering up to SPF 50 protection.

Coola Organic Setting Spray SPF 30

While we all love a multipurpose product for the versatility, Thomas recommends not relying on them solely for SPF protection. It's important to reapply throughout the day, she says and a setting spray with SPF built-in is an unbeatable option, as it "can help to add an even layer of protection while keeping makeup put."

This option has a matte finish, is both gluten-free and vegan and is easy to apply, being a face mist.

Uncomplikated SPF 50 Setting Spray

Another best bet when it comes to a setting spray and SPF combination product, this option from Kate Somerville includes the ingredient rhodiola rosea, that the brand says has anti-stress properties. Combined with lavender essential oils, it works to protect your skin with SPF and calm it down as well.

e.l.f. Suntouchable All Set For Sun SPF 45

A more budget-friendly pick compared to the rest, this is a clear, quick-drying misting spray that not only protects your skin, but keeps makeup in place as well.

It's good for all types of skin, especially normal, oily, dry and combination skin that needs a little added SPF during the summertime — no matter if you're in the office or outside.

Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder

Thomas loves this setting powder for its multiple shades and the travel sized option that includes an applicator.

It absorbs excess oils and adds a moderate shine to your skin, says Thomas, on this powder that is best for oily, combination and normal skin.

Best warm weather makeup looks previously seen on TODAY

TODAY contributor and Peloton instructor Ally Love shared some of her favorite makeup looks that are ideal for warm weather. Love even included some tips to make your makeup last, along with products that are just as promising as they sound.

For dewy summer skin

Charlotte Tilbury Mini Magic Cream

The best makeup application starts with skin prep, which is why Love suggests this cream from Charlotte Tilbury. The magic in the moisturizer lies in its formula — hyaluronic acid and peptides, to name a few — that the brand says visibly plump and smooth the skin.

And if you end up loving the product, it also comes in a full-size version, amongst other sizes:

Charlotte Tilbury Magic Cream Moisturizer

Refy Glow and Sculpt Face Serum Primer with Niacinamide

“A hydrating primer or one with glycerin in it makes for a great base and keeps makeup on,” says Love. Fortunately enough, this Refy checks both of those boxes. The mix of glycerin and niacinamide hydrates the skin and prepares it for makeup. That way, your makeup glides on smoothly, and stays in place throughout the day. Our favorite feature, however, is the fun roller applicator.

Dior Forever Glow Filter Multi-Use Complexion Enhancing Booster

The most important part to dewy summer skin is the glow, of course. To enhance the glow from all of the products above, Dior’s enhancing booster works wonders at bringing the ‘wow’ factor. The liquid illuminator is light, hydrating and blurring all-in-one so that the results are skin-like.

But, “If you have oily skin, do powder foundation then liquid because it will soak up excess oil,” suggests Love. “For dry or combination skin, use liquid foundation then powder.”

Merit Flush Balm Cream Blush

This award-winning blush is just as flexible to apply as it is to wear. For instance, you can use a brush to apply it or directly glide the product on the cheeks or lips to add a pop of color that lasts and never cakes. No wonder it is a viral favorite!

Tan Luxe The Face Illuminating Self-Tan Drops

Not everyone has access to a beach, but that’s where tanning drops come in handy. These drops from Tan Luxe can be mixed with your favorite moisturizer, serum or face oil to evenly distribute the product. According to the brand, your skin will be left with a beach-like tan and a streak-free finish.

Tan Towel Self Tan Towelette

The universal rule to self-tanning is to exfoliate before you apply. That’s what makes Tan Towel’s Self Tan Towelettes unique because they exfoliate, tan and moisturize your skin. Just unfold the towelette and rub in circular motions across the body to see the results.

For fool-proof makeup

NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil in Milk

“Using white eyeliner on the lower lash line can make your eye look bigger,” says Love. She suggests using the NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil for the look since it is creamy and buildable to apply. Plus, the pencil can even be used as an eyeshadow, too!

Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Cream Eyeshadow Stick

We love eyeshadow sticks because of their practicality. You can swiftly toss them in your tote to touch-up throughout the day, and they’re beginner-friendly to apply. But no eyeshadow sticks are alike, and the one that reigns at the top of our charts is Bobbi Brown’s long-wear eyeshadow stick.

Simply glide-and-go for pigment that promises to stay all day — and you can play around with it for a subtle highlight in the inner corner or a smokey eye, depending on the shade.

Morphe Vegan Pro 5-Piece Eye Brush Set

This Morphe eye brush set includes all of the essential brushes to apply and create various eye looks. At the end of it, you’ll become your own makeup artist as you blend, shade and build your shadows with ease. And there should be minimal shedding, too.

For day-to-night makeup

Dibs Beauty Desert Island Duo

This practical duo simplifies your base routine by combining cream blush and contour in one stick.

Dibs Beauty Duet Baked Blush

Whether you like the look of powder-based products or use them to set your creams, this product has two blushes to illuminate, set and/or add color.

Dibs Beauty Duo Brush Face

Apply, blend and set creams and powders with ease using Dibs' duo brush. Use the angled head for creams, and the large round side to pick up powders.

Laura Mercier Mini Caviar Stick Eye Shadow

If you couldn’t tell already, eyeshadow sticks are remaining in our bags all season long. Another favorite of ours is Laura Mercier’s Caviar Stick Eye Shadow, which feels and looks just as luxury as the treat itself. Expect this pigment to last up to 12 hours without creasing nor transferring, suggests the brand.

Clinique Almost Lipstick in Black Honey

“Adding a darker lip can take your makeup from day to night,” says Love, and we couldn’t have a bold, dark lip without including Black Honey from Clinique in the picture. You or the mother figure in your life has probably owned this shade before because it has continuously sold out since its launch. It’s loved for its glossy finish and soft texture that easily glides on the lips. We like it so much, we have previously reviewed the product before.
