The sun's up, and so is spending! 🌞 It's that time of year when finance teams breathe a sigh of relief and marketers run around like toddlers on a sugar-high, all thanks to the noticeable surge in consumer spending as the year winds down. But why are consumers more willing to spend this time of year? We've thought of a couple of reasons: 1) End-of-year sales 💸 Major sales events, such as Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and various other festive deals, create a sense of urgency. The fear of missing out on these time-sensitive discounts drive consumers to purchase items they otherwise may have postponed purchasing. 2) It's warmer 🌴 Yes, really. Research has proven that sunlight increases the brain's release of serotonin (the thing that makes people feel calm, happy, and focused) resulting in consumers being more likely to make purchases on sunnier days. 3) The psychological impact of 'year-end' 📅 With the year’s end around the corner, with only a few public holidays remaining, consumers want to 'just get through it'. This results in shoppers wanting to socialise more, celebrate more, and make the most of the remainder of 2024. Consequently, this also means consumers find themselves keen to spend on big and small ticket items, because they feel they've worked hard, and they deserve a 'little treat'. At the start of 2024, a wave of predictions set the stage for what brands and businesses expected to define the year. Some of these trends have successfully taken hold, while others remained more hype than reality. What trended: With the rise of AI, a massive trend everyone expected to see was the increased integration of AI-driven personalisation in e-commerce and retail - and BOY DID WE SEE IT! This year, AI tools have been pivotal in tailoring customer experiences, curating shopping lists, and customising recommendations utilising user data. The rise, and we do mean RISE, of TikTok! No one can deny that TikTok was the star of the show when it came to market trends in 2024. With its algorithm set up in a way for any account, no matter how small, to potentially capture massive reach, to introducing TikTok shop as an e-comm extension for brands to sell on. The platform has been crucial in redirecting how brands and consumers interact, by forcing brands to play by consumer rules in order to be seen (all of a sudden, everyone was very demure, VERY MINDFUL.) What tren-didn't: Remember how we all thought we'd be shopping and socialising in the Metaverse, remember how that didn't happen... awkward (cue crickets.) While Meta has been progressing, consumer engagement has been slower than anticipated. Instead, products like the Meta-glasses and Apple Vision stole more of the spotlight in 2024, possibly proving that people want metaverse integrations, but they still want them to exist in the real world! While some of the most hyped trends still have a long way to go, tech innovations and consumer-driven trends, like short-form videos, have truly defined 2024’s marketing landscape.
