  • Reflections on Women’s Day and Women’s Month by Refilwe Elizabeth Maduana Women’s Day and Women’s Month are significant as they draw attention to critical issues that women face, such as gender inequality and domestic abuse. These celebrations are essential in recognising the importance of women in the workplace and society. One particular occasion that inspired me was when I was still in college and our school counsellor organised a therapy session for us This session was incredibly helpful and highlighted the importance of mental health support. I have not celebrated Women’s Day or Women’s Month professionally. However, on a personal level, we usually gather at church to discuss business ideas and other supportive initiatives. A memorable moment for me was when my mom bought me a makeup kit, which helped me become a makeup artist. In the workplace, I believe we could better support Women’s Day and Women’s Month by organising special dedicated events and sharing motivational quotes and inspirations. This would help us continue and stick to the company culture. Our company does a good job of promoting gender equality and supporting women, recognising our achievements in meetings. I would like to recognise my mother and one of my colleagues during Women’s Day/Women’s Month. My mother has always encouraged me to do my best, and my colleague has been a great support system. Meaningful recognition for me includes highlighting women’s achievements, such as naming an employee of the month or a rising star. I would like to see more counselling sessions organised by the company which will serve as a platform for women to support each other. To better support each other and promote gender equality, we need to create a culture of openness and transparency. This will help us guide and motivate each other. For educational opportunities, I recommend the “Women Innovative” book, which talks about women’s contributions to various fields. Workshops and training sessions on self-defence and gender-based violence would also be valuable, not just for women but for everyone. – Refilwe Maduana John Thompson - A division of ACTOM (Pty) Ltd https://lnkd.in/gpJRyvy

  • Celebrating 30 years of democracy towards Women's Development Pretty Buyisile Dladla shares her thoughts on the commemoration of Women’s Month in South Africa. ‘ Women’s Day and Women’s Month are very important to me because they highlight the fact that women work just as effectively as men. Historical events, like the march to the Union Buildings, inspire me. Personally, I have not celebrated this occasion extensively, but I appreciate the company’s efforts to make us feel valued and appreciated. I believe workplaces could do more to support women, such as recognising our contributions and providing equal opportunities for growth. In celebration of Women’s Month, I want to acknowledge my female colleagues, my mother, and my sister for their support and encouragement. Meaningful recognition for me is about knowing our place as women and remembering our roots. Looking ahead, I hope our company continues to break down barriers and fosters a culture of mutual appreciation among colleagues. Educational opportunities, like workshops and training sessions, would be valuable for our growth. Although I have not attended many training opportunities, I am eager to participate in future events to enhance my skills and knowledge.’ – Pretty Dladla John Thompson - A division of ACTOM (Pty) Ltd https://lnkd.in/gpJRyvy

  • Celebrating 30 years of democracy towards Women's Development We sat down with Ayanda Mdlalose to garner her thoughts about Women’s Month and this is what she had to share… ‘International Women’s Day (IWD) is a global celebration that highlights the social, economic, and cultural achievements of women, especially in male-dominated fields. This day fosters harmony and recognition at work, providing an opportunity to honour women’s contributions. I am motivated by historical figures such as Harriet Tubman, who rescued around 70 enslaved people, and Kathrine Switzer, the first woman to run the Boston Marathon. Bringing it back home, I am inspired by workplaces hosting special banquets for women and commemorating the 1956 women’s march in Pretoria.’ Ayanda believes that investing in professional development and upskilling for women is crucial for workplace impact. ‘In celebration of Women’s Month, I would like to give recognition and appreciation to strong women like my grandmother, Nonhlanhla Nxumalo. I would like to see companies organising more networking events for women and training managers to shape a supportive workplace culture.’ – Ayanda Mdlalose. • WOMEN’S MONTH QUESTIONS- Julia Mokoena Honouring the Past, Empowering the Future Women’s Day and Women’s Month are significant occasions that allow us to reflect on the incredible contributions of women throughout history. One such momentous event is the 1956 Women’s March in Pretoria, where over 20,000 women of all races united to protest the pass laws. This powerful demonstration stands as a testament to the strength and resilience of women in the fight for justice and equality. On a personal level, Women’s Day and Women’s Month are opportunities to engage in meaningful activities that promote growth and empowerment. Many celebrate by mentoring young girls, guiding them to become strong and successful women. Attending women’s conferences is another popular way to gain inspiration and further personal development. In the workplace, these celebrations can be marked by organizing workshops, seminars, and mentorship programs tailored to support and uplift women employees. These initiatives not only enhance professional development but also foster a sense of community and belonging among women in traditionally male-dominated fields. It’s also a time to recognize and appreciate the incredible women in our lives. Whether it’s a sister who took on a motherly role, or colleagues who inspire us daily, acknowledging their contributions is essential. Celebrating these women helps to highlight the importance of support and recognition in both personal and professional spheres. Looking ahead, it’s crucial to advocate for continuous support for women throughout the year, not just during Women’s Day and Women’s Month. This includes implementing mentorship programs, wellness initiatives, and ensuring equal opportunities for all employees. By fostering an inclusive environment, we can empower women to thrive and succeed. For those looking to delve deeper into the contributions of women in various fields, resources like “Building Up: Women in Construction” by Joan Baker and the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) offer valuable insights and support. These resources provide inspiration and practical advice for women navigating their careers in industries where they are often underrepresented. By celebrating Women’s Day and Women’s Month, we honour the past, recognize the present, and pave the way for a more inclusive and empowering future for women everywhere.
