About us
The Minerals Council South Africa (Minerals Council) is a mining industry employers’ organisation that supports and promotes the South African mining industry. The Minerals Council serves its members and promotes their interests by providing strategic support and advisory input. All members of the Minerals Council automatically, upon accepting membership of the Minerals Council, become subject to its Membership Compact, as a condition of membership. The Membership Compact is a mandatory code of ethical business conduct to which members of the Minerals Council subscribe. A key role of the organisation is to facilitate interaction among mining employers to examine policy issues and other matters to crystallise and define desirable industry standpoints. The Minerals Council’s vision is to reposition the South African mining sector as South Africa’s foremost industrial sector. The Minerals Council seeks to create, in partnership with key stakeholders, a conducive policy, legislative and operating environment that facilitates doubling real investment in mining by 2030. This is an industry strategy and the Minerals Council is a respected mining advocacy organisation that works through trust-based, problem-solving partnerships to engineer this positive turnaround in the mining industry. The Minerals Council continuously looks for ways to advance the position of and make improvements in the South African mining industry, and participates in various initiatives and projects in areas relating to health, education, policy and regulations.

Last night (October 1), Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited CEO Peter Steenkamp, who served as an Office Bearer at the Minerals Council from June 2021 to June 2024, was honoured with South Africa’s highest mining accolade, being inducted into the SA Mining Hall of Fame. With 45 years of experience, Peter shared his passion for the mining industry, his love for South Africa, and its incredible people. Under his leadership, Harmony has evolved from a marginal gold producer to a world-class mining company with high-grade, cash-generative assets. Peter emphasised the critical importance of safety in the industry, prioritising the humanistic transformation for our workforce. Thanks to his vision, Harmony has achieved record production levels, strong free operating cash flow over the past financial year, all while establishing one of the world's most successful tailings retreatment operations. Former Minerals Council CEO Roger Baxter was inducted into the Joburg Indaba Hall of Fame, honouring his enormous contribution to the South African mining industry during his time at the then-Chamber of Mines and Minerals Council since 1992. Roger was involved in negotiations with the government to develop the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act, the Mining Charter and royalties.
