🔍 What’s on Your Plate? As South Africa navigates climate goals, the beef industry faces tough questions. ❓ What strategies can be adopted to support smallholder farmers while promoting sustainable practices in the beef industry? ❓How might implementing a tax on livestock emissions, similar to Denmark’s approach, impact meat prices and consumer behaviour in South Africa? What You Need to Know: 🟥 Agriculture's Role in Climate Change While South Africa’s largest emissions come from energy (78%), agriculture still contributes 11%, with methane from livestock responsible for 68% of this share. Methane, a potent greenhouse gas, traps 80 times more heat than carbon dioxide over 20 years, accelerating global warming. 🟥 International Trends and Local Challenges Denmark recently introduced a tax on livestock emissions, passing costs to consumers to encourage sustainable choices.South Africa hasn’t set agriculture-specific emission targets yet, but a draft bill is in progress to define these goals. 📲 Read [Beef and climate change — can South Africa take the bull by the horns?] https://lnkd.in/dUtZVScy? __________ 💡The Institute For Economic Justice (IEJ) warns that relying solely on expanding beef exports may harm smallholder farmers and worsen inequality. 📲 Read [The Beef with Climate Change: Growth, Equity and a Just Transition in the Beef Sector in South Africa] https://lnkd.in/dpYWKkyj 📲 Read Working Paper [Opportunities and Challenges for a Just Transition in the South African Food System] https://lnkd.in/dHMaU-Qc #ClimateChange #JustTransition #Agriculture #Sustainability
