Jointly published by Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd, SAPVIA, and the South African Wind Energy Association (SAWEA), the 2024 South African Renewable Energy Grid Survey (SAREGS) results reveals a remarkable growth in the renewable energy sector. The survey reports a significant increase in projects, now totalling 133 GW across various development stages, compared to 66 GW in 2023. Industry engagement has also surged, with participation rising from 209 to 483 contributions. 🔍 Key Insights: • Advanced Projects: 66 GW of Type A projects are nearing commercial operation, up from 18 GW last year. • Market Trends: 45 GW in public procurement, 28 GW in private offtake, and 43 GW targeting both markets. • Technology Focus: Solar PV leads with over 55 GW, followed by wind at 28 GW, and various hybrid and battery projects. 🌍 Regional Spotlight: The Northern Cape leads with 29 GW of interest, followed by the Free State and Hydra Central. 🔬 Tech Trends: Solar PV remains dominant with 55 GW, while wind and hybrid projects are also advancing significantly. Cape Town completes R14.6 million solar project The City of Cape Town (CoCT) has announced the completion of a 990kWp renewable energy project at the Kraaifontein Wastewater Treatment Plant, part of a project to decrease municipal facilities’ dependence on Eskom’s electricity supply. The project is called the small-scale embedded generation programme (SSEG), and the city has invested R20.6 million in three renewable energy plants at municipal facilities so far.
