South Africa's future innovators, Sandisiwe Nhlozi and Sanelisiwe Nhlozi (15 year old twins from KwaDabeka,KZN) showcased their talents on the global stage at the Stockholm World Water Week in Sweden! The two learners proudly presented their "Drop Drop" project at the Stockholm Junior Water Prize competition. The Grade 10 learners attend Buhlebemfundo Senior Secondary located in KwaDabeka.   You are already winners.

uMngeni-uThukela Water proudly supports and sponsors the South African representatives at the Stockholm Junior Water Prize to be held in Sweden. The competition is part of the World Water Week Conference that will be held from 25 to 28 August 2024 in Stockholm. The Buhlebemfundo Senior Secondary learners will be accompanied by their Educator Ms Phindile Mamthiya and KZN Regional Co-ordinator, Mr Nathi Zwane. uMngeni-uThukela Water sponsored the each team member with a full track suit, golf shirt and hand luggage. An intimate handover was held at the school. In attendance were the school Mangement, DWS officials Bongiwe Msane, Director: water and sanitation services support, Bheka Zondi ,Deputy Director:water and sanitation services support and Nathi Zwane, KZN regional coordinator for the Water and Sanitation Education Programme. UUW was represented by Water Education Specialist Sunita Doodhnath.

𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮 𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: 𝗧𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝘂𝗿𝗯𝗮𝗻 𝗛𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀 𝗱𝘂𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗹𝗴𝗮𝗲 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵 uMngeni-uThukela Water’s Durban Heights Water Treatment Works is currently treating reduced volumes of water due to filters being clogged by large volumes of algae. This has affected the volumes of treated water being supplied to some parts of the north and south of the eThekwini Municipality. Over the past two weeks, there has been a substantial increase of volumes of algae in water received from the Albert Falls-Nagle Dam system. While the increased presence of algae is not common in the colder winter season, there has been an increased algal count at the Durban Heights Water Works which has led to the clogging of filters. Due to this increased presence of algae in raw water, the Durban Heights Water Treatment is currently unable to treat the full amounts of raw water it normally supplies to its customers. uMngeni-uThukela Water is currently implementing a number of interventions including optimising its water treatment processes and using advanced chemical treatment methods to unclog its filters. We are also undertaking ongoing water quality and quantity monitoring to ensure the production of safe drinking water. Most dams in uMngeni-uThukela Water’s area of operation are above 80% of full supply capacity except for Ludeke, Hazelmere and Imvutshane dams due to safety reasons. DID YOU KNOW? Water is pumped from the Mooi River (i.e. Spring Grove Dam and Mearns Weir) into the Upper uMngeni System (i.e. Midmar Dam) through the Mooi-Mgeni Transfer Scheme.
