Happy New Year! 🎆 For 20 years, London's South Bank has been the backdrop to some of the UK's biggest NYE celebrations. The stretch of river owes many of its architectural centrepieces to the legacy of the 1951 Festival of Britain, a national exhibition that catalysed the development of the Southbank Centre. In this 1951 photo by Reginald Hugo De Burgh Galwey from the #RIBACollections, diners sit on the terrace of the South Bank restaurant designed by Leonard Manasseh. The chairs are the 'Antelope' model designed by Ernest Race especially for the festival. 🔎 Want to find out more about architectural history? Our collections are the place to start: https://ow.ly/aT4X50UukjU 📌 After the festive period, RIBA will reopen at 8am on Thursday 2 January 2025. See you after the break!

"The final question was put by RIBA delegate Alex Ely of Stirling Prize-winner Mae Architects: much has been said about what UK architects can bring to KSA, but what could participants in the practice mission take home with them? On that, there was a unanimous response: ambition." We've just returned from Cityscape Global, the world's largest real estate event. A team headed by our chief executive Dr Valerie Vaughan-Dick MBE FRCGP (Hon) and board chair Jack Pringle PPRIBA was joined by representatives from 21 UK-based chartered practices, 8 CPD providers and four corporate partners. This year, an estimated 200,000 visitors attended the four-day trade fair, which featured 400 exhibitors along with 500 speakers at seven conferences on the future of urban development in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. ➡️ Chris Foges, Contributing Editor at RIBA Journal, takes a look back at what we learnt: https://ow.ly/1y9L50UkNrO #RIBAatCityscape #Cityscape2024

🏆 Modulus Matrix: 85 Social Housing in Cornellà, Barcelona by Peris + Toral Arquitectes is the winner of the RIBA International Prize 2024, our bi-annual prize for the world's best new architecture. An innovative housing project that aims to redefine residential design and construction, this year's winning project achieves low CO₂ emissions and the combination of low-impact and time-efficient construction allows for the roll-out of similar projects where housing need is greatest. "Peris + Toral Arquitectes’ inspiring housing project in Spain embodies the kind of transformational spirit that is both aspirational and demonstrates genuine change. By embracing flexibility and longevity through long life, loose fit architecture, it is a radical approach to social housing that creates a place designed for people to adapt and inhabit in the long term. This visionary scheme allows for new and future ideas of what constitutes a family, and should be seen as blueprint for delivering sustainable, quality housing around the world at scale. It is a strong example of the ways in which architects can create new and implementable solutions to the common challenge of creating housing for all.” - Muyiwa Oki PRIBA, RIBA President ➡️ View the winning project: https://ow.ly/V13650UglSp #RIBAawards #RIBAInternationalPrize
