In the Leuser Ecosystem on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia, our collaboration with PANTHERA and SINTAS Indonesia is dedicated to protecting wild cats and mitigating human-wildlife conflict. This vital conservation effort is greatly supported by the use of camera traps, which gather invaluable data on species locations, population sizes, and interactions. Through the remarkable efforts of 30 locally trained patrollers, over 30,000 images (including more than 2,000 wild cats) of diverse species have been captured, while also removing countless snares intended to harm wildlife. Meet Paul Hamilton the ultimate aficionado of all things aquatic and aquarium-related! A passionate marine biologist, Paul has spent the last two decades crafting and managing public aquariums across the globe from his native New Zealand to the exotic shores of Australia, China, Kazakhstan, Russia, Thailand, Malaysia, and the Middle East. A self-proclaimed shark enthusiast, Paul has worked on nine international aquarium projects, including the Melbourne Aquarium and the Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo before his current project at The National Aquarium Abu Dhabi - Al Qana. The conservation success story featured in the The Guardian is truly remarkable. "The thumbnail-sized snail was officially extinct when, in March 2020, pictures taken by local citizen scientist Mark Scott found their way to the inbox of Dr. Isabel Hyman, a malacologist (snail scientist to you and me) at the Australian Museum in Sydney." Recently, Marc Pons of Computational Ecology Group Inc. (CEG) presented scientific research that was supported by Mubadala and the Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund at the North American Congress for Conservation Biology (NACCB) in Vancouver, Canada. His presentation, entitled “Climate vulnerability of the Canadian sagebrush ecosystem”, focused on how sagebrush cover has changed over time and how it is expected to change in the future under different climate change scenarios. Sagebrush is vitally important for species like the greater sage-grouse, which is listed as endangered in Canada and depends heavily on sagebrush for food and shelter. The 2024 NACCB drew nearly 2,000 conservation researchers and practitioners from across the continent to share approaches and findings, and importantly, to collaborate on tough problems like conserving the sage-grouse/ sagebrush system as the climate changes.   #MBZFund #conservation #endangeredspecies #wildlifeconservation #biodiversity #sustainability #uae #abudhabi #canada #birds #sagegrouse #grouse #exoticbirds
