It is #IAC2024 wrap-up and we had a dedicated session on European Space Agency - ESA ‘s space sustainability activities. During the week, several ESA experts presented the crucial work they do to make #SpaceSustainability a reality across all ESA programmes. We wanted to put the spotlight on some of them to illustrate ESA’s holistic approach to space sustainability, spanning the Earth, Earth’s orbit, as well as the Moon and beyond. Andrea Vena, ESA Chief Climate & Sustainability Officer, provided an overview of our global space sustainability strategy. Marie Le Pellec, PhD gave the audience the opportunity to start a discussion with him and other experts on the activities they lead. Massive thank you to Aline Decadi, Francesca Letizia, Antonio Caiazzo and Stefaan De Mey for sharing insights on the activities they are leading, to make our space programmes valuable and sustainable. #SpaceSustainability #SpaceCircularEconomy #Ecodesign #LifeCycleAssessment #ResponsibleSpace #SpaceDebrisMitigation ESA Clean Space

At #IAC2024, we turned the spotlight on the vital role of space in driving Earth’s sustainability. Now, more than ever, it is essential that we maximise the benefits of our satellites to society - one of the core goals of the European Space Agency - ESA Green Agenda. We’re taking proactive steps to highlight the societal benefits of our projects. In their technical sessions, Alcimed, Carbone 4 , Ekodev and the International Space University unveiled innovative methodologies for evaluating and quantifying sustainability benefits of ESA’s downstream applications. The significant challenges to tackle: -Merging qualitative insights with quantitative data -Bridging gaps in the literature on downstream emissions -Identifying all users when data is freely accessible Collaboration is key to overcome these challenges and drive impactful progress toward a sustainable future.

What a great discussion yesterday on #SpaceCircularEconomy in our GNF panel at #IAC2024 - Paddy Neumann from Neumann Space shared with us his innovation - with flight heritage already - making the very definition of space circular economy: a propulsion system able to use space debris as a propellant in space! - Charity Weeden from NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration highlighted key challenges (technical, economic, policy) but as she said, “necessity is the mother of invention”! - our very own Andrea Vena from the European Space Agency - ESA reminded us that resources are rare and expensive in space, which actually creates a real opportunity for circularity. ESA aims to support the technology development required. - Cedric Balty from Thales Alenia Space concluded with the importance of collaboration, as we need to join efforts to generate the ideas for tomorrow’s space sustainability! Thank you to our panellists. Please check the platforms they shared with us to move from commitments to action.

Day 3 at #IAC2024 and a few sustainability highlights on our end: - 3 new space agencies joined the Statement for a Responsible Space Sector (we will be more than 70 after Thursday’s signature event) - a great discussion with JAXA: Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency on each agency’s sustainability actions. Sharing is key to collectively improve! - an interesting panel on the value of space data, especially Earth Observation, to “serve our societies”. Simonetta Cheli highlighted the importance of developing the right missions that will answer actual needs and fill gaps. See you this Thursday for the #SpaceCircularEconomy panel in Red Hall 1 at 11.25am.

Three space agencies joined the Statement for a Responsible Space Sector today. Congratulations to the Agenzia Spaziale Italiana, the #SwedishNationalSpaceAgency and the #PortugueseSpaceAgency. Join Josef Aschbacher and Andrea Vena tomorrow at 3.30pm at the #IAC2024 European Space Agency - ESA booth to welcome 14 additional organisations to the space community making space activities more sustainable. We will be over 70 signatories by the end of the day tomorrow! #SpaceSustainability
