💡 Insightful article on #cleantech development in the #GlobalSouth by Vikram Singh & Kingsmill Bond, RMI ✨️ Some of the article takeaways, to spark interest: ✅️ One fifth of the Global South, from Brazil to Morocco, from Bangladesh to Egypt and Viet Nam, has already overtaken the Global North in terms of the share of solar and wind in electricity generation, or the share of final energy from electricity. ✅️ In 2024, 87% of Global South capex on electricity generation will flow into #cleanenergy, and the International Energy Agency (IEA) expects new solar and wind capacity to increase by 60% to 77 GW. Solar and wind generation has been growing at 23% per year for the past 5 years, supplies 9% of electricity generation, and is only 5 years behind the Global North. Electrification is already at 75% of Global North levels, and growing faster. ✅️ We need to do more. Two key areas of the Global South are not yet adopting #cleantech innovations – low-income countries (6% of energy demand) and fossil fuel exporters (21% of demand) 📖 Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/gFPwtJG9

Info
The Global Cleantech Innovation Programme (GCIP) of UNIDO, supported through the Global Environment Facility (GEF) in partnership with the Green Climate Fund (GCF), promotes clean technology innovation and entrepreneurship in emerging markets and developing economies for climate action. GCIP has pioneered a transformative intervention model that prompts cleantech industry development by combining direct business training and mentoring with investment facilitation and national ecosystem capacity-building. GCIP supports start-ups and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with innovative cleantech ideas in creating and upscaling robust business models. At the same time, GCIP strengthens national ecosystems and facilitates partnerships and networking between private and public actors. GCIP experts and implementation partners devise capacity-building tools and strategies for national technology innovation institutions, industry associations and business platforms. GCIP enables knowledge creation and exchange to promote collaboration and synergies across ecosystems.

🌍 UNIDO driving #CircularEconomy #Innovation in #Nigeria UNIDO is at the forefront of advancing the circular economy and #climatechange #mitigation through impactful partnerships and innovative #solutions. A key milestone in this effort is the commissioning of 25 Reverse Vending Machines (#RVMs) in Abuja, Nigeria, as part of the project “Promoting sustainable plastic value chains through circular economy practices" with funding from the Government of Japan. These machines, designed to reduce #plasticwaste and increase recycling rates, were developed by The Ecobarter Company. This outstanding Nigerian #startup is also part of the alumni network of UNIDO's Global Cleantech Innovation Programme (#GCIP), supported by the Global Environment Facility. #GCIP provided the Ecobarter with essential business acceleration support, including training, #mentorship, and access to #investors networks, which empowered them to scale their solution and become a key player in Nigeria's #wastemanagement transformation. As the best woman-led #startup of the pitching competition of the #CleantechDays2023 at the International Vienna Energy and Climate Forum (IVECF), Ecobarter’s CEO, Rita Idehai, showcased the transformative potential of their innovative solution to global audiences. Ecobarter’s journey with UNIDO is a great example of the power of synergies, where expertise, #innovation and resources intersect to multiply impact. This collaboration demonstrates how UNIDO is bridging together diverse initiatives to drive sustainable development, empower local communities and foster a more sustainable future. 📢 On 12 September, #GCIP had an exciting opportunity to contribute to the UNESCO-IEEE Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Early-Career Engineers in Africa! At the bootcamp, participants learned about Sustainable Development Goals (#SDGs), #innovation for #sustainabledevelopment, opportunity assessment, intellectual property, and financial & market knowledge for #startups. To inspire future #innovators, we invited four of our alumni from #Lesotho, #Nigeria and #SouthAfrica - Morongoe Caroline Falatsi, founder of NomsaPlasticBricks, Kenechukwu Mbonu, managing partner of ARMOGRID, Rita Idehai, founder of The Ecobarter Company & Luvuyo Ndiki, founder of RCV3D ™ – to talk about their #solutions, their #entrepreneurship journeys and exciting opportunities that lie ahead for those who choose their careers in #cleantech. As the world is facing many interconnected global challenges such as #climatechange, biodiversity loss, and socio-economic issues, we need a systems approach where innovation and entrepreneurship play critical roles in driving sustainable transitions. Young engineers, with their technical expertise and fresh ideas, are uniquely positioned to create lasting solutions. Innovation and entrepreneurship are critical drivers of sustainability transitions, and we are proud to support these efforts through the UNIDO’s GCIP, supported by the Global Environment Facility and the Green Climate Fund. We hope that our contribution to the bootcamp gave participants new ideas and inspired them to action. 🌐 Learn more about GCIP’s work, visit our website: gcip.tech 👉 If you want to work together towards a cleantech-powered future, write us at gcip@unido.org
