Last week, we had the honor of meeting the Governors of Qena and Luxor, Dr. Khaled Abdel Halim and Eng. Abdel Motaleb Emara. 🌎 UNIDO's deputy to the Director General, Fatou HAIDARA opened the policy roundtable on circular economy in the margins of the United Nations Summit of the Future, followed by a key note speech from the former prime minister of Sweden and Co-Chair of the High-Level Advisory Board on Effective Multilateralism, Stefan Löfven.   "We believe circular economy will need to be an essential part of the post-2030 development agenda. [...] Circular economy can be an opportunity and a tool to rethink global governance, and ensure greater equity in the decades to come. I encourage you all to be ambitious, and not to shy away from using that circular mindset that we have developed with our hard work so far." Haidara highlighted in her opening remarks.   ♻️ The importance of circular economy solutions was further emphasized by Löfven: "By embracing circular economy principles, we can unlock a range of benefits: circulation of existing materials and products, while also fostering natural regeneration. We can create new jobs, for example in recycling and sustainable product design. This support enabled us, for example, to obtain a production unit in El Boghdady Industrial Zone. Luxor has been mostly known for tourism and sugarcane cultivation, but the Industrial Zone has supported investments and has been a real transformation” – Attaa Gad Elkareem, General Manager of Bedaya 🌽 Mozna receives residual raw material from biogas units and further processes it to create organic fertilizers for small and medium-sized farmers 💬 “We started our operations in a small production unit hosted by an incubator in Luxor, where everything was done manually. As a result of UNIDO’s support, we have grown and shifted to a steady production line in the Industrial Zone, including automated packaging. Now, we seek to export our products.” – Mahmoud Salah, Operations Support Coordinator of Mozna 🧴 Mac Oils produces natural oils from organic products 💬 "UNIDO has given crucial support in three areas. Firstly, given the distance from our Luxor-based business to Egypt’s administrative center in Cairo and the new capital, UNIDO’s assistance in accessing regulatory requirements has been vital. For example, UNIDO has brought key administrative personnel from Cairo closer to businesses in Luxor. Thanks to this support, we successfully obtained a license for the product itself as well as an export license. Secondly, trainings and visits to factories have significantly improved how we manage our operations. Thirdly, UNIDO has supported us in facilitating connections with partners and potential customers. For example, we had the chance to join Food Africa as one of the Egyptian food companies. That enabled us to expose our business and products to multinationals and establish connections with large retail chains," says Mohamed Abbas, General Manager of Mac Oils.

We are thrilled to share the wrap-up video produced by #DGNEAR, highlighting, among others, our SWITCH:COLAB session which took place during WCEF in Brussels this year.
