The Hon Mark Butler MP, Minister for Health and Aged Care, spoke at the AusBiotech 2024 Conference, addressing the incredible potential of our biotech sector to match the global output of our medical research community. This included developing a whole pipeline approach – from discovery to start-up, clinical trials, manufacturing, export, access, and reimbursement. ⚖️ “A streamlined, harmonised, effective, predictable and consistent operating environment is essential for a vibrant health and medical research ecosystem.” Key highlights from the speech: 1️⃣ Australia ranks #7 globally in health and medical research, with over 1,200 biotech companies, 55 medical research institutes and 40 medical research focused universities. The government is committed to enhancing this sector to create high-paid jobs and improve health outcomes for all. 2️⃣ A collaborative effort between startups, SMEs, research institutes, and government is critical to streamlining processes and accelerating innovation. Together, we can bridge the gap between research and real-world application. 3️⃣ The government is investing over $12.6 billion in R&D and $1.5 billion in medical science commercialisation and manufacturing, creating opportunities for advancements in health technologies, including digital solutions. 4️⃣ The “National One Stop Shop” initiative aims to simplify clinical trials and health and medical research, making it easier for innovators to bring their solutions to market. It promises to enhance productivity and improve health outcomes. 5️⃣ Butler looks forward to the Greenpaper and Whitepaper from AusBiotech, which will outline actionable steps to tackle challenges in our industry and drive solutions. “I want to see these ideas and to work with you to take them off the page, out of the lab and into the real world.” 🔗 Read the full speech here: https://lnkd.in/gyv6NVNe Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care

Women are more likely to receive good care during pregnancy when AI and other clinical software tools are used, according to new research from the University of Birmingham. A review of more than 12,000 papers and 87 articles investigated the impact of AI and related software tools in maternity settings. The findings revealed that although there were variations in each situation and implementation of clinical decision support systems (CDSS) reviewed, most showed improvements in outcomes for the pregnancies. It was found that the odds of improved outcomes were 1.69 times higher (69%) in women cared for using CDSS, with data from over 5.2 million pregnancies in both high-income and low- and middle-income countries. Dr Neil Cockburn, lead author and research fellow in health informatics at the University of Birmingham, said: “The government has made digital transformation of the NHS a top priority to improve quality of care and reduce costs, and CDSS will be a key technology in delivering these improvements. “However, there needs to be systematic, rigorous, and rapid evaluation of the tools being used in order to ensure they are doing what is expected while keeping up with the pace of change in technology.” Read more: https://loom.ly/Eq3BO44
