Munarra means thunder in Yorta Yorta language 🖤💛❤️ And that's the name of the new Regional Excellence Centre in Shepparton. Munarra Centre's aspiration is to empower and educate local communities. It will combine education, culture, arts and sport to create a healthy community and the leaders of tomorrow. From the First Nations-led design, the construction and the partnerships - the Centre is an example of Self-determination in action.

Covering 225 hectares with over 100,000 plants and a 26,000 m² green roof, the Victorian Desalination Plant and Ecological Reserve has thrived over the past decade. The before-and-after contrast is striking, reflecting a commitment to environmental stewardship and nature's ability to reclaim even the most challenging landscapes. 𝙋𝙧𝙤𝙟𝙚𝙘𝙩: Munarra Centre for Regional Excellence and Rumbalara Football Netball Club Extension – design and construct 𝘾𝙡𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙩: Victorian School Building Authority, Department of Education and First People’s State Relations Department of Premier and Cabinet (Vic) 𝘾𝙤𝙨𝙩: $36 million ($30m Victorian State Government and $6m University of Melbourne) TVN On-Country is proud to have completed the Munarra Centre for Regional Excellence (MCRE) and extensions to the Rumbalara Football Netball Club (RFNC), on Yorta Yorta Country in Shepparton, for our clients and their education and community partners. History will be made in the magnificent MCRE building - designed by ARM Architecture - with its distinctive Aboriginal flag-inspired roof and culturally significant landscaping by Bush Projects Landscape Architecture. The MCRE is a First Peoples-led pathways-based education centre – the first of its kind in Australia - delivering culturally responsive education, employment, health and wellbeing initiatives. The RFNC improvements provide match-fit facilities for players and spectators and connect the club, via a striking blue bridge and walkway, to the MCRE building. #TeamTVN was committed to raising the benchmark for #socialimpact on this project: 💲 10.8% of project spend with Victorian Aboriginal businesses – against a mandated spend of 1.5% 🖤 💛 ❤️ 32.9% of our project team were Victorian Aboriginal people – against a 15% target ⛏ 27,267 hours of onsite construction works by disadvantaged Victorians – against a 3,000-hour target 👷🏽♀️ 15.9% of the total labor hours for apprentices and trainees was carried out by women – against the 4% target. Yesterday, the Munarra Centre for Regional Excellence officially opened its doors, establishing a world-class education, sporting, and public gathering space that honours the world's oldest living culture on Yorta Yorta Country, Shepparton, Victoria.   An incredible Welcome to Country was followed by speeches from Uncle Paul Briggs OAM of Kaiela Institute and the Hon Natalie Hutchins MP, Minister for Treaty and First Peoples.   The result of a genuine co-design process, the Centre's design, guided by ARM Architecture with Bush Projects Landscape Architecture, reflects a deep commitment to the Yorta Yorta community, with spaces thoughtfully crafted to support education, sporting activities, and the sharing of First Peoples' knowledge. The project comprises two parts: an upgraded Rumbalara Football Netball Club to the north and a new community and academic building to the south.   The new building, resembling the Aboriginal flag from above, features a central circular courtyard, a veranda for indoor/outdoor learning, and a firepit, all developed in close collaboration with stakeholders. The design also incorporates the Nanyak Wall, a photographic representation of the community's history, which extends into the landscape and connects to the northern site. The northern site includes an upgraded Rumbalara Football Netball Club, with new netball facilities, renovated clubrooms, and a unifying canopy that reflects the colours of the Rumbalara logo.   “The Munarra Centre for Regional Excellence and the Rumbalara Football Netball Club are so unique they are nation leading. I am excited and optimistic about this investment's potential to deliver the future to Yorta Yorta and other First Nations including the people of south-eastern Australia,” said Deputy Chair of Munarra Limited, Uncle Paul Briggs OAM.   “We are incredibly proud to have been part of the Munarra Centre for Regional Excellence project. This Centre is more than just a building; it represents the spirit and resilience of the Yorta Yorta peoples and their profound contributions to the community. The Geelong Library and Heritage Centre, designed by ARM Architecture and located in Geelong, is an eight-level structure that features a distinctive geodesic dome, partially buried and artfully positioned between significant heritage sites like the Geelong Peace Memorial and the Geelong Art Gallery. The building’s exterior is clad in a unique pattern of hexagonal and pentagram-shaped glass-reinforced concrete panels, with muted brown tones that create a visual link to its historical neighbors while maintaining its distinct modern identity. The west wall of the building merges with the surrounding Johnstone Park, featuring crystalline glass shards reminiscent of a grotto entrance, enhancing the connection between the structure and nature. Inside, the library offers a versatile and sustainable space, with various levels dedicated to community engagement, learning, and cultural preservation.
