ARM’s Viv’s Place project claimed two top honours at the Australian Apartment Advocacy’s first national Apartment Awards for Excellence, held Friday 25 October in Brisbane. The project won in both the Diversity in Housing and Pioneering categories, amid an evening that saw 23 winners recognised across 15 categories for their achievements in multi-residential development. Congratulations to our client Launch Housing and everyone involved in bringing this project to life. Cohen Connect recently celebrated 100 years of the Cohen Medal, an award recognising architectural students who exemplify both academic excellence and a spirit of selflessness, at Moana Hall in Perth. The milestone was marked with an evening presentation and panel discussion focused on the future of architecture.   ARM Director Andrew Lilleyman was part of the panel moderated by Philip Gresley alongside other previous Cohen Medal winners Emma Williamson, Jennie Officer, Richard Hassell and Nicholas Temov.   Centred around the theme 'Designing Hope', the group discussed the unprecedented challenges facing the built environment today, where the expertise of architects and design professionals has never been more vital. Vale Graeme Cecil Gunn. We are deeply saddened by the passing of Dr Graeme Gunn, a giant in Australian architecture. At ARM, we feel this loss especially keenly, as Graeme was not only our mentor but a great friend. He gave Howard and Ian their first teaching jobs at RMIT after they graduated, allowing them to establish their early practices. Both continued to teach at RMIT for more than a decade under the practitioner-teacher model Graeme pioneered. He was instrumental in securing RMIT’s support for Transition magazine, setting it up for a decade of influence, and he brought Peter Corrigan to RMIT. In our master planning work, we were particularly grateful for his leadership as principal architect at Docklands, where he ensured quality design through his wisdom and integrity, curating a number of exemplary buildings. Graeme was a role model for our practice, from his work on Winter Park, Plumbers and Gas Fitters, and Merchant Builders, to his contributions in architectural education and government advisory roles. He was a foundation stone of Design City Melbourne. Canny, courageous, with a great sense of humour, and someone who never pulled the arrogant maestro schtick. We miss you, Graeme.

Recently, we relaunched our Open House Melbourne podcast with 'Catalyst', a limited edition conversation series that unpacks clever design solutions in the built environment. Host Tania Davidge deep dives with designers and field experts as they explore themes and issues that act as catalysts for creative design thinking. In today's episode Audience as Catalyst, Tania Davidge speaks with Professor Katya Johanson from Edith Cowan University and architect and founding director, ian mcdougall from ARM Architecture, to help unpack the relationship of audience to the design of the contemporary performing arts centre. The Blacktown Exercise and Sports Technology Hub (BEST) has won GOLD in the ‘Architecture – Public and Institutional’ category of the 2024 Sydney Design Awards! Located at Rooty Hill in Sydney’s western suburbs, the $100-million Blacktown Exercise Sports and Technology Hub (BEST) is an internationally significant sporting precinct, improving the performance of athletes and the health of the community in an immersive and inspiring setting. Commissioned by Blacktown City Council as part of their award-winning Transformational Projects Program, BEST was designed by ARM Architecture, with landscape architecture by Architectus (formerly Scott Carver).
