For two decades, we’ve proudly supported the Yarra Valley Arts x Yering Station Sculpture Exhibition and Awards. This year, partner Gia Cari attended on behalf of Arnold Bloch Leibler and recognised the great importance of the event to both local artists and the Yarra Valley tourism industry. As one of Victoria's longest-running annual sculpture exhibitions, the event continues to showcase both emerging and established artists. The exhibition will be on display at Yering Station in the Yarra Valley until Sunday 8 December. All commissions on artwork sales are donated to My Room Children’s Cancer Charity and Yarra Valley Arts. Congratulations to Yering Station on the continued support of the event. Well done to all of the finalists in the competition and the judging panel, which also included another long-standing client, Anthony Fitzpatrick from TarraWarra Museum of Art.

Introducing Tim Graham, a Tax lawyer from our Melbourne office. We sat down with Tim to discuss his practice, the ABL tax team, and his involvement with our public interest department. ❔ Can you tell us a bit about the type of work you do? I would describe my practice as broad. I work with a diverse range of clients – from private groups and high net-wealth individuals to public companies and not-for-profits. I handle all kinds of tax disputes, including ATO reviews and litigation in the AAT and Federal Court. I advise on a broad range of tax issues including mergers and acquisitions, cross-border arrangements, corporate structuring, and trusts. No two matters are the same and it makes the work challenging but rewarding. ❔ What do you appreciate most about working with the ABL tax team? ABL’s tax team is incredibly close-knit. I’ve had the opportunity to work closely with some of the best legal and tax minds in the profession. The collaborative and supportive culture has allowed me to grow both professionally and personally. Working at ABL has been rewarding and genuinely enjoyable. From day one I’ve felt like a trusted and valued member of the team. As a lawyer, you’re encouraged to be independent and accountable. More importantly, you’re given the responsibility to take ownership of your matters from beginning to end, and to advocate for clients when it matters most. ❔ Can you tell us about your involvement with ABL’s public interest team? ABL’s Public Interest team is truly special and I’m proud to be given the opportunity to advise not-for-profit and pro bono clients. The firm has a deep commitment to public interest work and has built strong, lasting relationships with First Nations clients and their causes. The team works closely with most departments across the firm, which has given me the opportunity to work with First Nations clients and other purpose-driven organisations to navigate the complex tax and regulatory environment.

Meet Lauren Winn, a lawyer in our Dispute Resolution & Litigation team in Melbourne. Lauren joined us a graduate in 2022. With a diverse background that includes stints at a not-for-profit, and a government tribunal (to name a few!), Lauren brings a unique perspective to her work. We asked Lauren to tell us a bit about her journey and her practice. Read more below. ❔What kind of work do you typically handle in your role as a lawyer? Working in the litigation team, I’ve had the chance to work with a range of clients on challenging and high-profile cases. I represent large corporations, private companies and private individuals on a range of matters from restructuring and insolvency work to ASIC investigations and general commercial litigation. I’ve also acted on behalf of several pro bono clients involved in a variety of matters including defamation and disputes within the federal and state human rights jurisdictions. ❔Can you tell us about a case that you’ve worked on in your career so far? One of the most rewarding experiences of my career so far has been representing a high-profile Australian artist in a sex discrimination case. We achieved a favourable outcome for our client, and it was a formative experience in my career getting a glimpse into the ways that litigation can have real world and wide-reaching impacts. ❔What drew you to work at Arnold Bloch Leibler? Towards the end of my degree, I volunteered and worked in a range of roles and realised I was especially interested in litigation. ABL has a unique reputation in this space, and I was drawn to the idea of working on the sorts of high profile and complex matters that ABL tends to handle. As a law graduate, I was able to see first-hand a culture where juniors work in small teams closely with partners and clients from day one which I think is quite unique to the firm.
