We exist to keep Australia moving
About us
At ARTC, we exist to keep Australia moving. Established in 1998, we’re a vital link in the nation’s transport supply chain – maintaining and operating rail lines across the country to help move freight and passenger trains. As one of the largest rail network managers in Australia, our 8,500km network spans five states, 39 worksites and the lands of more than 50 First Nations. We’re unashamed champions of rail as a safe, responsible and cost efficient way to transport people and products. In fact, our people manage the transit of more than 410 trains every day to connect our regions, cities and ports. Importantly, we foster an inclusive, values-led culture and have an uncompromising commitment to the health and safety of everyone who works at ARTC. We embrace diversity in all forms and are committed to building a respectful, fair and flexible workplace.

Congratulations to the winners of this year's RTSA - The Railway Technical Society of Australasia's University Challenge! 🎉 Proud of our student engineer Henry Williams who was part of the winning team and mentored by our own Angus Mason. Special shout out to Muhammad Ali, another great ARTC mentor in the program. We know that today's students are tomorrow's industry leaders so congratulations to all involved! #FutureOfRail
University Challenge: A Thrilling Conclusion! 🎓🛤️ The RTSA - The Railway Technical Society of Australasia SA University Challenge culminated in an exciting final night, sponsored by AusRAMD Engineering. The evening kicked off with a presentation by Peter Parrish from AusRAMD, followed by the highly anticipated student team presentations. Our esteemed judging panel, consisting of Stratton Killis, Poppy Sun, and Danny Chau, had the challenging task of evaluating the teams' solutions. A total of 5 teams competed, showcasing their exceptional skills and knowledge. While all teams demonstrated impressive work, Team 1 narrowly emerged victorious (much closer than the AFL Grand Final 🏉), securing the $1000 cash prize generously sponsored by Australian Rail Services. Congratulations to Balin Hampton, Jose Calderer-benitez, Henry Williams, and Praanesh M. of Team 1 for their outstanding achievement! We extend our sincere gratitude to our dedicated mentors: Muhammad Ali (ARTC), Angus Mason (ARTC), Luke Deverix (Precision Rail Australia Pty Ltd), Poornesh . (McConnell Dowell), and Shamara Gunawardhana (Keolis Downer Adelaide). Your guidance and support were invaluable to the students. A special thanks to Chris Rykiert and Gary Sharpe from the SA Committee for their tireless efforts in organising this challenge with the universities. And let's not forget Bing Wu for capturing the night's memorable moments with his camera. We're already looking forward to next year's University Challenge and the exciting new opportunities it will bring! #RTSAUniversityChallenge #RailIndustry #EngineeringStudents #Competition #FutureOfRail

At ARTC, we’re constantly striving to improve network resilience and reliability. This month, more than 850 maintenance activities were completed during routine works across our Hunter Valley network, including 76km of tamping to pack ballast under the railway tracks (see photos from Narrabri, NSW). A huge thanks to our dedicated frontline teams for safely delivering these essential works and supporting our ongoing efforts.

Some see a simple photo of a culvert upgrade in outback Australia, others see stocked supermarket shelves! This is an example of the work we’re doing to boost the resilience and reliability of our rail network to help ensure uninterrupted transportation of goods across the country in support of the national economy. It’s part of a culvert upgrade project on the vital East-West rail corridor between Port Augusta and Kalgoorlie – one of 18 sites we’re currently upgrading to reduce the risk of disruption during a flood event. Congratulations to our teams for removing and replacing Gap Bridge in just four days! In just 96 hours, the team removed the old bridge and installed a new, 80-metre concrete bridge, as well as 160 metres of new track. This work is a key part of our focus on strengthening and improving the reliability and efficiency of our network. Huge thanks to our dedicated track crews for getting the job done.

Did you know that more than 160 passenger trains run on our national rail network every day, including the Indian Pacific, Ghan, Overland, Great Southern, NSW TrainLink and V/Line? Last year, close to 60,000 passenger trains transported people on our network around our great country - a number that we'll continue to grow. 📷 The Ghan near Port Augusta, South Australia. #Rail #PassengerRail #RailFuture #KeepAustraliaMoving

We’ve started major works on our Southern Highlands Overtaking Opportunities project in NSW to help ease congestion for freight and passenger trains between Sydney and Melbourne. The $54.1 million project will deliver overtaking opportunities for trains at Werai near Moss Vale and Joppa Junction near Goulburn to enable more efficient and reliable services. The project is due for completion in early 2026. Read more: https://bit.ly/4d8KKtd

It’s definitely been a busy few days for our frontline teams who have just completed a host of track works as part of a ‘super possession’ to keep our rail network running safely and reliably. From 11pm Friday night through to 6pm last night, works were undertaken between Sydney and Melbourne and between Cootamundra and Parkes (NSW) – from rerailing and resleepering through to structure repairs and track reconditioning. We’re proud of our awesome track crews for getting the jobs done in support of our ongoing efforts to strengthen our network.

What a great event with leaders and advocates for rail sustainability. Our Chief Financial Officer Kylie Gallasch took the opportunity to talk about what we're doing to deliver a safe, reliable and resilient network that operates as part of an integrated supply chain. It was great to be part of the conversation and be able to highlight our support of the Australian Government's commitment to transport decarbonisation and Net Zero by 2050.
#RailSustainabiity // The ARA Rail Sustainability Leaders’ Summit was a success with over 100 attendees. The presentations, highlighted the critical need for ongoing collaboration between industry and government to advance low and zero emission rail technologies. The Hon. Danny Pearson MP, Minister for Transport Infrastructure, Minister for the Suburban Rail Loop, Assistant Treasurer, Minister for WorkSafe and the TAC opened the Summit and emphasised the importance of increasing female participation in the rail workforce and the impact of Melbourne's new Metro tunnel project. Mia Barnard, Transport Decarbonisation Lead, GHD, and the ARA’s General Manager – Sustainability, Joeley Pettit gave a briefing on the ARA’s recent report, The Critical Path to Decarbonise Australia’s Rail Rollingstock – Transitioning the rail industry. Andrew Aitken Principal, Inland Rail showcased the solar-powered signalling system at Coolleearlee that will power a crossing loop in the area and the sustainability benefits it has brought to the project, including a saving of $10,000 a year in operational energy costs. Andrew Morgan, Assistant Secretary – Net Zero Unit, Department of Infrastructure, gave a detailed briefing on the Transport and Infrastructure Net Zero Consultation Roadmap. Kylie Gallasch, Chief Financial Officer, ARTC, gave a thought-provoking address on the network’s efforts to cope with repeated severe weather events. The Summit also included panel discussions on “powering our future – the energy transition”, decarbonising our rail freight network, fast tracking our journey to net-zero, resilience and innovating to deliver sustainable outcomes.
