It's always great fun and enlightening spending time with members of the Northern Territory Cattlemen's Association for their annual conference, in #Darwin for #NTCA2025 this time. When you consider that the "average" NTCA member has a herd of 8,000 head and a property of 3,000km2, and collectively they manage 2million+ head of cattle across a pastoral estate of 700,000km2, it's clear there is nothing average about this Organisation! 🙌 A thousand delegates were treated to a busy program addressing an impressive scope of topics and issues, from Data-Driven Decision Making and #CarbonAccounting to the value of Product Branding, insights from the National Farmers' Federation and Cattle Australia's 6 main priority policy areas for the looming federal election. The leader of the National Party of Australia (The Nationals) and Shadow Minister for Agriculture, The Hon. David Littleproud MP also made a noteworthy appearance, reiterating the Coalition's support for the live export trade and a fully-funded national #Biosecurity system no less! Having been a sponsor and exhibitor now for several years, it's both encouraging and reassuring to see that discussions around #CarbonFarming, Scope Emissions, Biogenic Methane Cycles, #Baselining, and #Biodiversity are now relatively commonplace among Northern Territory Station owners, managers and service providers, and that there is a general and growing awareness of the importance and value of #NaturalCapital. We look forward to continuing those conversations with our various clients and partners as we all eagerly await the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water's and the Clean Energy Regulator's release of the IFLM formal exposure draft in the coming days. Huzzah! It is hugely deserving that our founder and chief, Adam Townley, has been recognised by The Australian in The Green List: Australia's Top 100 Energy Players. He's rightly placed alongside other industry stalwarts and esteemed individuals committed to developing and implementing climate solutions in their myriad forms and frameworks. This worthy acknowledgement is also a timely nod to his work with industry and governments as co-chair of the Carbon Market Institute (CMI)'s Integrated Farm and Land Management (IFLM) task force. Adam’s vision, sagacity and drive to unlock natural capital by regenerating landscapes in broad scale nature-based carbon projects is relentless and contagious...and an example to us all. While only part of “The Big Green Revolution”, his/our contribution is as valuable and important as any! What a fantastic final day of the Carbon Market Institute (CMI) Australasian Emission Reduction Summit! 📺 The day kicked off with a panel discussion in the style of ABC’s Q&A program, with a mix of Australian political, business and community leaders discussing the climate crisis, the role of carbon markets in the NetZero challenge, and the need to scale up decarbonisation investment. 🎯 Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen MP said in his keynote address that the ACCU scheme is a critical part of the ‘Net’ in ‘Net Zero’ and confirmed a new Integrated Farm and Land Management method enabling multiple activities that store carbon in landscapes will be going ahead in Q1 2025. [Read a transcript of his speech here – https://lnkd.in/gP48zuq6] In response to Emma Alberici's question: wouldn't it just be easier to tax carbon like Ross Garnaut suggests, Bran Black, CEO of the Business Council of Australia, was brief in stating that would not be a practical solution. He added that of his 130 members, many if not most already have their own targets and they're on the cutting edge of climate technologies and initiatives to deliver jobs and opportunities while accelerating towards net zero. 🌳 Gawler Ranges Aboriginal Corporation member and former Chair, Dr. John Reid, shared his observations of the Human-Induced Regeneration Method and the need for it to be continued to restore the generational adverse impacts of colonial settlement and overgrazing of the pastoral estate. ⚖ Luke Menzel (CEO of the Energy Efficiency Council) reminded us that the more Australia relies on just one sector of the economy, the harder it will be to decarbonise because it’s impossible to resource in that way; and keeping it local and real, Kate Gibson from EnergyAustralia said we need to keep thinking about the renewable energy propositions that people can actually afford. ⚡ James Harman made the point that 'running long skinny wires all over the country, to remote places like Broken Hill is inefficient and unreliable', while in the same breath he gave kudos and a shoutout to the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), for helping EDL deploy their first few microgrid energy solutions to remote communities and mine sites. 👩🎓 The Boardroom Masterclass session was a terrifically entertaining role-play exercise, highlighting the many and varied considerations confronting Directors charting their companies' course to decarbonisation. Peter Castellas, Elisa de Wit, Vicki Mullen GAICD, Vicky Binns and Georgina Woods were all wonderfully enthusiastic and thorough in their strategic guidance of a convincingly cavalier CEO (Castellas😂) 🙏 And those mentioned here are only a few! Thank you to the CMI for corralling so many intelligent and committed speakers with enlightening experience and a willingness to share 🙌 Although it's back to work for now, we'll see you again next year!

A great first day of the Carbon Market Institute (CMI) Australasian Emission Reduction Summit! #AERSummit - A timely opportunity to discuss and reflect on Australia’s climate change policies and initiatives. Here’s just some of our team’s takeaways from today: 🐘 Victorian Minister for Climate Action Lily D’Ambrosio MP likened decarbonisation to an elephant giving birth, insofar as the gestation period is a long time in the making, but the birthing will happen if care and commitment is maintained. 📖 Sandrine Dixson-Declève - currently in Australia promoting her latest book ‘Earth for All’ - said we need to rethink our value markers and how we piece just about everything together, taking into account the value of our environment, decarbonisation and ultimately survival. 🌎 Jukhee Hong talked about Green Bonds and ASEAN policy initiatives to develop credible carbon markets. She said the ASEAN Common Carbon Framework aims to unify efforts to pursue carbon neutrality - introducing liquidity and inter-operability between nations to fast track their carbon markets and emissions reduction. 🏛 New Chair of the Climate Change Authority and former NSW Treasurer, The Hon. Matt Kean, said combating climate change is essential to protect our farm lands and environments and highlighted how the carbon market is becoming more functional thanks to efforts like the Safeguard Mechanism. And, Eliza Murray, also from the Climate Change Authority, said the bulk of sequestration will have to come from land based projects because they are the “least cost” methods, at least until engineered methods are brought further online and scaled up. 🤝 Dr. John Reid, Chair of the Gawler Ranges Aboriginal Corporation, spoke about the need to ensure social licence and that it is an ongoing process and a learning process. Consult early and often, he said. Relationships don’t happen over a week. 📈 Chair of the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), Justin Punch said there are no straight lines in the energy transition, and the results are back-ended, while Joanne Chong from the Productivity Commission said it’s important for the Government to continue signalling its intent behind the regulations required to grow the circular economy; to give certainty and disincentivise other/alternative/less effective approaches. 💪 CEO of The Superpower Institute, Baethan Mullen said there’s a significant coordination challenge to get all the policy settings aligned, and there’s a lot more work to be done on this front. 🎯 Rachel Clarke from NRM Regions Australia said they’re very keen to see the existing carbon industry integrate with the emerging Nature Positive Market and that we shouldn’t seek to make methods perfect otherwise we potentially miss out. She said the biggest risk to carbon is losing the license to operate. Lots of robust and important conversations.
