Early intervention, stopping cycles of harm and helping children heal from difficulties and trauma so they can thrive.

About us

Be Centre is a self-funded charity providing one-to-one Play Therapy for kids aged 3–12 years. We are dedicated to early intervention, stopping cycles of harm and helping children heal from difficulties and major trauma, so they can thrive. Play is a child’s natural medium of communication, it allows children to make their internal world external, giving children the opportunity to ‘act out’ situations which are disturbing, conflicting and confusing to them. Children in trauma need to be able to retrace and express the trauma to heal and move forward. Established in 2008, Be Centre is the only centre of its kind in Australia providing effective and evidenced-based Play Therapy programs for disadvantaged and vulnerable children, who otherwise could not access vital therapeutic support. We receive no government funding and rely solely on the generosity of the community along with caring individuals and companies to ensure we can provide children experiencing difficulties with the skills and resilience they need to create brighter prospects for the future and ensure that problems don’t become more complex and entrenched. The need for our services is acute and growing each day. We continue to work towards building capacity in our new centre and this year are focusing on reaching full capacity in our core Play Therapy program so that we can help more vulnerable children than ever before.

  • Why Art and Creative Therapies Matter Art and creative therapies play a vital role in building healthier, more resilient communities. These evidence-based approaches empower individuals to express emotions, process trauma, and find healing through creativity—especially for those who may struggle to communicate in traditional ways. Let’s be clear: trained art therapists are highly skilled professionals with Masters-level qualifications. They are not “shonky providers” (as Bill Shorten calls the providers he's scrapping off NDIS) but compassionate clinicians who make a profound difference in people’s lives every day. While we respect the need for reform within the NDIS, it’s crucial not to dismiss or undervalue therapies that have transformed countless lives. Let’s continue to celebrate and support the incredible work of these therapists, who are essential in helping individuals thrive. Support this petition by Dr Carla van Laar to protect NDIS funding for these - https://chng.it/xhzfvsrjBv #SupportArtTherapies #CreativeHealing #NDIS

  • Trauma from domestic violence affects not only children but their entire family systems. At Be Centre, we know that true healing requires a holistic approach, which is why we offer free counselling to every child’s family as part of their therapeutic journey. Trauma can deeply impact a child's brain development, emotional regulation, and behavior. This is where Play Therapy steps in, providing children with a safe space to express and process difficult emotions through play. Some may perceive Play Therapy as “just playing,” but neuroscience tells a different story. Play Therapy is grounded in evidence that shows how play helps children regulate emotions, improve cognitive functions, and rebuild trust after trauma. At Be Centre, we help children develop new ways to express themselves, making sense of their experiences and promoting long-term emotional healing. By offering counselling to families, we empower parents and caregivers with tools to better support their children at home, creating a healthier environment for everyone involved. This comprehensive support system is crucial for helping children overcome the effects of trauma and thrive. ** For business leaders seeking to invest in impactful, science-based interventions, supporting Play Therapy is investing in the future mental wellbeing of our children - and future adults.** Read more below.

  • As we recognise National Child Protection Week, it's important to remember that we all have a role in creating stronger, safer neighbourhoods. This can start by talking to your neighbours, checking in with friends, being a good role model, and offering support to parents instead of judging or competing. Lend a hand where possible and speak up if you see something unsafe. It's essential to listen to and value what children have to say. Whenever possible, include their voices in decision-making and advocate for their best interests. By regularly discussing personal safety with children, helping them understand how to protect themselves, and being attentive to their worries, we build trust. This makes it more likely they’ll come to us when something significant is happening in their lives. Make your influence positive. Start a conversation today with your colleagues and families about the importance of listening to and valuing the voices of children and young people.
