Co-operative housing provides a powerful opportunity to enhance Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance (ESG), particularly through innovative new builds that reflect best practices. Earlier this year, CEHL developed eight townhouses in Endeavour Hills, designed with these principles in mind. Co-funded by CEHL and Homes Victoria through the Big Housing Build, this project is designed to deliver long-term, affordable housing. The development incorporates ESG principles, ensuring lower operational costs for future residents. Key initiatives include a 6-star NatHERS rating, electric appliances, energy efficient materials and water efficient strategies such as rainwater tanks and a WELS 4-star toilet. This project reinforces CEHL's dedication to embedding ESG principles across all developments, prioritising sustainability, social equity, and governance excellence in co-operative housing. #cooperativehousing #coophousing #affordablehousing #cehl #coop #wearecoop #HomesVictoria

Thanks Australian Co-operative Housing Alliance (ACHA) for a great summary of an inspiring Summit. Already looking forward to 2025!
An incredible day of learning at the ACHA 2024 Co-operative Housing Summit! 🌟 A huge thank you to everyone who made this event possible! From our platinum sponsor, KeyInvest, to the dedicated attendees — your support and participation created an unforgettable experience. A special shout-out to Stephanie Miller of Common Equity Housing SA Ltd and her team for hosting. Our keynote speakers truly set the stage for a day full of insights: Tim Ross of CHF shared valuable lessons on the power of co-operative housing to build resilient communities in Canada. Sidsel Grimstad and Melina Morrison launched the European Study Report and shared valuable lessons learned by the tour participants earlier this year. Professor Wendy Stone talked about the learnings she and her colleagues gained during the three-year project study on Australian Housing Co-operatives. . The workshops were full of practical takeaways for co-operative housing communities. Thank you to the presenters, Peter Sibly, Nasteha Mohamud, Molly Kendall, and Amy Lees. At the conclusion of the day Liz Thomas delivered the closing remarks and launched the Australian Co-operative Housing Alliance policy blue print, which calls for a dedicated community housing funding stream to grow co-op housing to 10% of Australia’s social housing stock. Key takeaways from the day: Co-operatives can lead change: Together, Australia's co-operatives have the power to address housing inequality. Advocacy at all levels of government is essential. Collaboration is key: Fostering partnerships is essential for growth, including between co-ops, members, government and the wider community. Sustainability is the future: Co-op housing must prioritise sustainability in design and governance to create lasting impact. A special shout-out to all the attendees, both in person and online! Your engagement, questions, and enthusiasm made the summit dynamic and insightful. 🙌 We're excited to build on the conversations sparked at the summit and continue working together to strengthen the co-operative housing movement. #ACHASummit #CooperativeHousing #Placemaking #Governance #ESG #CoopHousing #Sustainability #LearningTogether Jess Davies-Huynh (she/her) Heidi Claus Louise Miller-Frost MP - B App Sc, MA, MPH, MBA, FAICD Craig Brooke Fiona Herman Alyce Holmes Hayley Clark Karen Fixsen Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute (AHURI) Common Equity Housing Limited (CEHL) Business Council of Co-operatives and Mutuals (BCCM) The Co-op Federation United Housing Co-operative ltd. Partnership power! These 6 new homes Common Equity Housing Limited (CEHL) developed in partnership with Homes Victoria will be managed through CEHL’s partnership with Larrakeyah Housing Co-op members. The power of co-ops is already evident - Larrakeyah had the new co-op members selected and waiting to move in on handover and had all 6 families settled in their new homes within 72 hours! Co-ops give renters control and influence over how their property is managed - build to rent co-op housing, where people rent like they own. Now that’s giving renters a voice! New social housing in Greater Geelong! 🏡🌿 We partnered with Common Equity Housing Limited to deliver 6 new homes earlier this year. These homes are managed by the Larrakeyah Common Equity Rental Housing Co-operative, who managed to get renters into the homes within 3 days of getting the keys! Abigail moved into her home with her partner and two daughters and described it as “the best feeling ever." Working in partnership with community housing organisations like Common Equity Housing Limited (CEHL) is an important part of how we deliver more and better homes for Victorians. The strength of the co-operative housing model lies in its versatility. It empowers members to manage their communities and homes in a way that best suit their needs. With a diverse range of co-op models both in Australia and globally, there is much to learn and adapt. Earlier this year, a Business Council of Co-operatives and Mutuals (BCCM) tour brought together a group, including MD Liz Thomas, to explore how international housing co-operatives operate. This experience inspired us to bring fresh ideas to our existing housing model, enhancing the way we serve our community. ‘We are treating housing as an investment rather than a home and we're causing people to be homeless because it's not profitable for somebody else's investment’ The value of co-operative housing is backed by research by Western Sydney University and has been identified in the State of the Housing System 2024 report as a mainstream housing pathway. And this is why. ‘I really liked the village aspect of it and having that sort of social side of things. I was a single mother [when I first moved in] with a child and it was a really good way for both of us to have more social contact" ‘…it's a really supportive way for people to live’ ‘…feeling safe, a positive impact on mental health, a strong sense of community and wellbeing among the benefits of co-op living.’ Co-operative housing is part of the solution. https://lnkd.in/e2ndXv9B #cooperativehousing #coophousing #affordablehousing #cehl #coop #wearecoop

In 2021, 10 houses in Castlemaine were retrofitted with a range of energy efficient initiatives including door draught proofing, underfloor insulation, solar panels and awnings as part of the CEHL & Mount Alexander sustainability Group Retrofit Project. A 12-month monitoring phase, started in September, is tracking temperature, humidity, solar production and energy consumption alongside resident feedback. Early data shows significant improvements in energy efficiency and comfort. The pilot project aims to identify the most effective and scalable initiatives for future CEHL properties, marking a key step toward a more sustainable future. Stay tuned for more updates and findings! #cooperativehousing #coophousing #affordablehousing #cehl #coop #wearecoop #sustainability

Is the rental market fit for purpose? NSW Rental Commissioner, Trina Jones posed that question earlier today when talking on ABC News RN Breakfast. Once seen as a stepping stone to owning your own home, today’s rental market is in a state of crisis. One third of Australians live in a rental property and many will be forever renters, how do we ensure that the rental market is fit for purpose? Rental housing co-operatives provide an alternative to direct rental and help make the market both fairer and more sustainable.
