Thanks to our friends at Evolve Housing and SGCH in Sydney for hosting some of our Board members and senior staff at their offices, and at a variety of site visits this week. It’s been an inspiring couple of days to see first hand the collaboration and quality of work of some of the sector’s largest CHP’s. Spanning social, affordable, SDA and youth housing, the strategic focus on building sustainable homes and communities is highly evident, as is the commitment to sustaining tenancies. Wendy Hayhurst also provided a comprehensive update, which was invaluable to gain a deeper understanding of Community Housing Industry Association’s policy and advocacy focus. We hope we can return the favour to you all in Perth soon! Josephine Buontempo Janelle Marr FAICD FGIA GCB.D MBA Felicity Zimmermann Kerryn Edwards Jason Kirkby Jaynie Edwards

WA's leading community housing provider
About us
Foundation Housing is a not for profit, community housing organisation which provides affordable housing for West Australians on low incomes and those who are vulnerable to homelessness. We are the State’s largest rental property manager with more than 2,000 tenancies, housing around 3,500 people in 132 suburbs and towns across WA, including in the Kimberley and Pilbara. We have property ownership assets of $200 million and manage assets of $650 million. As a high-impact social enterprise, we operate a commercial model that invests all profits back into addressing housing need. In the past five years we have delivered almost 300 new affordable homes across WA. However, we also understand that the underlying issues in social housing cannot be addressed solely by increasing the supply of affordable housing. We work in partnership with our tenants and community, government and other service providers to reduce demand for social housing by supporting our tenants and lodging residents to make a positive exit from the system if they are able to do so. Our core strategies to achieve this are to impact demand, leverage growth opportunities from our existing assets and from partnerships, and ensure our organisation is aligned so that we can operate efficiently and effectively. We are constantly evolving, seeking better and more efficient ways to meet our tenants’ needs and to address the unmet demand for affordable housing. We do this because we understand that having a safe and secure home provides people with the foundation to look forward with hope.

Today was the 3rd of our workshops with the fantastic Catherine Kolomyjec and what wonderful, impactful sessions they have been. Thanks to our Operations staff (and some special Rents team colleagues) who so enthusiastically participated in these workshops, were open and vulnerable and reinforced how values driven our frontline teams are. We’ve all learnt a lot about leading with compassion.

What a special adventure the team at Foundation Housing Ltd and I have been on over the last couple of months. We started with a self-compassion workshop for frontline staff, followed by a values workshop with the team leaders and today I spent the morning with the Managers exploring compassionate leadership. It was a great chance for the managers to reflect on where their teams are at, the good work they are already doing and the simple 1%s they as leaders can apply to build wellbeing and growth with their staff. They had the chance to discuss the strengths that they bring to this amazing business and how they can use their strengths to create a workforce that thrives. It is a complex and often difficult world that the Foundation Housing team work in, especially in these times. So it is refreshing to see these leaders take on the challenge of testing new ways to build connections and celebrate the valuable work that each of their teams do. I can't wait to catch up with the regional teams next week! Thank you Kerryn Edwards and Renee Lamberth for this impactful journey we are on together. #compassion #appliedcompassion #compassionateleadership #values #curiosity #connection #leaders #socialhousing #thekindnesschallenge

Our Community Engagement Team was invited to attend the Housing Choices Western Australia annual Tenant Art Showcase last week. More than 50 tenant artists got the opportunity to showcase their creativity and talent to guests and tenants from across Perth. We are always to excited to see what our industry partners are doing to connect and engage their tenants. We all believe that affordable, safe and secure housing has the power to change lives so supporting one another is integral. Congratulations again to Housing Choices WA on a fantastic event, we look forward to holding our own Makers Market in November!

Congratulations to our team who were at this morning’s HBF Health Run for a Reason. They got the whole organisation on board with their fundraising, which included everything from bake-sales, a Bunnings sausage sizzle, a raffle and the highly lucrative swear jar! They’ve raised several thousands for Parkerville Children and Youth Care, a fantastic cause. Great work team - you’ve really done us proud 👏👏

The housing crisis and homelessness can impact everyone, even our young people. Foyer Oxford was featured in the The West today with Ava talking about her experience at Foyer Oxford and the need for more services across the state to help young people experiencing housing insecurity and homelessness. Foundation Housing Ltd reposted this
Robert is one of Foundation Housing Ltd's lodging tenants, kindly sharing his story to highlight a missing piece of the #housing puzzle, especially in the push to #endhomelessness. Despite the historical perception of lodging or boarding houses, CSI UWA's new report 'Reimagining the role of lodging in ending homelessness: An evaluation of Foundation Housing Ltd's lodging and support service' shows that this type of accommodation needs greater focus as it offers a viable, cost-effective solution to the #housingcrisis. At Foundation Housing, we’ve always known the important role that Lodging plays in our housing system. It provides a safe, secure and affordable place for people to live, for as long as they like. It’s not short term or transitional or just a stop-gap. Some of our residents have been with us for over 10 years and will remain with us for a long time to come. We fully fund this housing and support because we know it’s helping people to re-build their lives and, without it, many of our residents would be homeless. Yesterday’s launch of the evaluation of our Lodging and Support Services by the Centre for Social Impact UWA reinforces the critical role of Lodging in the WA housing system, the positive outcomes it is achieving, its alignment with Housing First principles and how highly cost-effective it is. Thank you to the Hon Patrick Gorman MP for launching the report and for his insights into what the Federal Government is doing to address the housing crisis. He and his Government are fully invested in addressing homelessness and his support is very much appreciated. Thank you also to Paul Flatau and the team at CSI UWA for all their hard work on this Report. Paul’s insights into the impact of our Lodging and Support services are evidence-based and provide important data to help inform future funding decisions. Finally, thank you to Robert – one of our long-term residents – for sharing his story and his beautiful reflections on his experience of Lodging, beyond it simply being a home. He talked of the importance of human connection, community and lending a hand. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house. Our Lodging, Support and Community Engagement teams work so hard to build strong and supportive communities with our residents and the Report’s findings validate all of their work.
