Project Profile || Powerhouse Parramatta: Black Truss Installation After watching the mega-sized white trusses being carefully lowered into place, the black trusses have now been installed. These images capture the installation of the first black truss. But why a black truss in a sea of white steel? This black truss is part of a series that comprises the ceiling of Exhibition Space 3, a 700-seat flexible black box space that will present industry, community and learning programs. This installation marks another milestone in the construction of Powerhouse Parramatta, bringing the vision of this dynamic space one step closer to reality. World Design Awards 2025 || Berwick Car Park & Bus Interchange Exciting News! Today, the BETTER FUTURE Awards World Design Awards 2025 revealed their shortlisted projects, and we are incredibly proud to share that Berwick Car Park was shortlisted among the best. The quality of the submissions from across the global BETTER FUTURE Awards programs was exceptional, and being recognised is truly an honour. Our project stands out in design and leads the way in sustainability. We've created a more efficient structure that prioritises environmental responsibility by eliminating the traditional 'second skin' of the car park - aluminium screening which is high in embodied carbon. By embracing a dematerialisation approach, we have utilised materials and products in the most cost-effective and sustainable way. The 'open air' design also further minimises reliance on artificial lighting and ventilation, creating a naturally more energy-efficient space. Well done to the talented Genton team and our collaborators, who helped bring this vision to life. Let’s keep pushing the boundaries of sustainable design! Out & About || The Architecture Symposium: An/Other City We were delighted to participate in The Architecture Symposium: An/Other City at the Art Gallery of New South Wales on Friday, 29 November. The Design Speaks forum, organised by Architecture Media, was expertly curated by Andrew Burges and Maryam Gusheh, who did a fantastic job bringing together an exceptional group of speakers and crafting an engaging, thought-provoking theme. Parramatta was discussed as an example of a second city within a capital city. Parramatta holds a dual status: it is both peripheral to the globally recognised City of Sydney and uniquely positioned as the most centrally located urban area within greater metropolitan Sydney. As Australia’s second European settlement and one of its most multicultural localities—where over 60% of residents were born overseas—Parramatta represents a fascinating urban narrative. The session explored the emergence of new cultural infrastructure in Parramatta as the city redefines its identity and equivalence with Sydney on a global stage. Steven Toia, Principal at Genton, was delighted to present the Powerhouse Parramatta, accompanied by a video contribution from Moreau Kusunoki, who were unable to join live. This presentation provided an exciting opportunity for the MKG team to discuss the Powerhouse Parramatta project, its impact on urban environments, and the broader shift towards decentralised cities. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Andrew and Maryam for inviting us to speak and a special thank you to Georgia Birks and Sophia Buckle of Architecture Media for their support. Many of our team members from Genton attended the event, inspired by the insightful talks and enriched by the collaborations and conversations we shared with colleagues from other practices during the breaks. Thank you once again for this invigorating experience! Photo credit: Anna Kucera
