  • We're thrilled to share that our talented Brisbane team member Sophie Richards has been awarded the prestigious AILA 2024 Karl Langer Award and the QUT University Medal. First presented in 1972, the Karl Langer Award represents the highest honor bestowed by the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) to a landscape architecture graduate. Sophie's unique approach to landscape architecture, combining environmental science with a deep commitment to social justice, exemplifies the innovative thinking we value at McGregor Coxall. As noted by the AILA jury panel, her work pushes beyond conventional sustainability and livability targets, exploring new frontiers in urban environmental design. The jury particularly commended Sophie's diverse perspective, depth of research, and dedication to integrating socio-cultural justice with ecological systems thinking. These qualities not only earned her these prestigious recognitions but also make her an invaluable member of our team. We extend our warmest congratulations to Sophie and look forward to supporting her continued growth and contributions to the field of landscape architecture. #LandscapeArchitecture #Sustainability #UrbanDesign #FutureLeaders #AILA #Innovation

Graduate Landscape Architect & Research Assistant

I feel deeply honoured to announced that I received the Karl Langer Award at the end of last year. First presented in 1972, this annual award is the deemed the 'highest honour awarded to a graduate of landscape architecture by Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA)'. It is awarded to a 'student completing the Landscape Architecture degree at the QUT (Queensland University of Technology) who shows ‘marked potential for the profession of Landscape Architecture’. I could not think of a better way to round out this rollercoaster of a study journey. Preparing for the 20 minute presentation and putting together my portfolio gave me a moment to reflect on what led me to study Landscape Architecture and Environmental Science in the first place. This process revealed a philosophy that is not only linked to my practice, but is an intrinsic part of my personal day to day thinking. I am driven by a desire for environmental and social justice and I believe we must push the boundary from “sustainable” and “liveable” cities - to cities which actively restore, regenerate and repair ecological and social systems. A heartfelt thank you must go to the amazing judging panel Joshua Hinwood (Chair), Lisa Mercer and Taneile Nixon. Your support, generosity with your time and insights are greatly appreciated. A sincere thank you to the QUT staff who nominated me and to AILA for making this award possible. And finally, last but by no means least, to my fellow nominees; you are such an inspiring group. I feel very lucky to have studied alongside and worked with many of you. I know how much passion, effort and time goes into your work and I have no doubt that you will all achieve incredible things.

We were thrilled to be shortlisted and invited to interview for the recent Regent Street, Haymarket, and Piccadilly Circus Public Realm Competition. We were delighted to partner with Schulze+Grassov on the proposal for this inspiring project that will reshape the heart of London's West End. We would also like to thank our fellow team members, including Arup, Contemporary Art Society, Maynard Design Consultancy, and Jayne Earnscliffe, with whom we formed a great synergy and look forward to collaborating with again in the future. The team drew on their detailed knowledge of the area from previous projects, envisioning a bold transformation that would prioritise people and nature while celebrating the area’s rich cultural heritage. One of our core proposals was to create a regular 'sounding board' of well-respected global peers to be involved in the process, including Philip Coxall, Sowmya Parathasarathy, and Jan Gehl. We wish Allies and Morrison, The Crown Estate, and Westminster City Council all the very best with this fantastic opportunity. #UrbanDesign #Sustainability #London #PublicRealm #WestEnd

Grateful to attend the launch of Brabazon New Town yesterday, hosted by YTL Corporation Bhd Chairman Tan Sri Sir Francis Yeoh Sock Ping and featuring an inspiring keynote by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. Brabazon is set to transform Bristol as one of the UK’s largest brownfield regeneration projects, with the YTL Arena Bristol, new homes, schools, parks, commercial spaces, and a train station shaping a vibrant future. Colin Skellett’s presentation offered an engaging reflection on the site’s rich history and its ambitious future. I was particularly pleased by the special mention of the #Biolab’s contributions to the project’s centrepiece initiatives. Proud to see McGregor Coxall's Masterplanning work on Brabazon City Green with Alec French Architects and our Landscape Architecture contributions on the YTL Arena in collaboration with Grimshaw. We are thrilled to be working on the transformative landscape-driven masterplan for the landmark GSK Brentford site in West London. Working with Hadley Property Group, the 5.4ha former GSK headquarters will be redeveloped into a mixed-use neighbourhood that reconnects communities north of Great West Road with Brentford town centre, creating new pedestrian and cycle-friendly routes, dynamic public spaces, and sustainable landscapes that respond sensitively to the local area. McGregor Coxall’s interdisciplinary expertise in resilient landscape and urban design, and Biourbanism Lab research, will lead in the delivery of innovative public spaces. The exceptional project team includes Haworth Tompkins, Buro Happold, Velocity, Turley, Walsh, as well as plot architects dRMM, Studio Egret West and Metropolitan Workshop LLP. We have been working with the community through a series of co-design sessions and first public consultations are now underway. We look forward to collaborating to deliver this transformative scheme. #LandscapeArchitecture #UrbanDesign #Sustainability #London #PlaceMaking

  • 2024 has been a big year, and we'd like to thank our audience for your continued support & interest. From master planning new cities and regions to our appointment to the Legacy Development Corporation Framework for the London Olympic Park site, and the continued transformation of Bristol we’re creating impact at all scales. Our pioneering biodiversity strategies in Brisbane and innovative flood resilience projects in the UK demonstrate our commitment to sustainable design, and we’re looking forward to the Australian Pavilion at Expo 2025 in Osaka and the continued rollout of dramatic new lookouts and tourist areas along Australia’s Great Ocean Road. More and more clients and developers are using our digital twins to ensure world-class project outcomes, climate resilient places people can love and enjoy.   We’ve also shared through keynotes and conferences of touring Biourbanism in Latin America & the Caribbean, with Founder & Chief Design Officer Adrian McGregor delivering keynote talks, including at the International Congress of Architecture and Urbanism. Landscape Architect | AILA Fresh VIC Co-chair

Reflecting on My Journey as AILA Fresh Vic Chair ✨ As 2024 comes to an end, so does my time as Chair of AILA Fresh Vic. Reflecting on these past two years fills me with immense gratitude and pride – it’s been an incredible journey of stepping out of my comfort zone, discovering my true potential, and gaining a deeper sense of self-awareness. When I first joined AILA Fresh Vic as a committee member in 2022, I had no idea what to expect. Helping organize our first studio visit at McGregor Coxall opened my eyes to the importance of building bridges between students, graduates, and professionals. Stepping into the Chair role in 2023, I was filled with doubt. Was I ready for this? Could I handle the responsibility? Balancing work, personal life, and visa stress only made it even harder to believe in myself. What I found, however, was a team of incredible people - fellow committee members, our chapter manager Verity Campbell and AILA Vic executives Azin Emampour and Ayeh Azarbashi who supported me every step of the way. They showed me that leadership isn’t about having all the answers; it’s about showing up with sincerity, embracing challenges, and leaning on the strength of a team. Together, we built something truly meaningful: - Expanded the Mentorship Program to record participation, fostering invaluable connections. - Revitalized our Herring Island Volunteering Days, establishing an ongoing tradition of community support and environmental stewardship. - Hosted monthly Fresh Thursday visits, bringing students, graduates, and professionals into inspiring studio environments. - Collaborated with EmGAN and Young Planners to launch the Common ground, championing interdisciplinary connections. - Played a key role in International Women’s Day Common Ground, where I had the honor of opening the event to advocating for inclusivity and empowerment in our profession. - Represented AILA Fresh Vic at the AILA Education Summit, contributing to meaningful discussions about the future of our profession. This role taught me so much - about leadership, resilience, and the importance of believing in myself, even in moments of doubt. The challenges, the growth, and the meaningful connections I’ve made along the way have not only shaped me as a professional but also as a person; it’s been a transformative experience of self-discovery that I will carry with me forever. To everyone in the AILA community who encouraged me along the way, thank you. To my fellow committee members, thank you for trusting me, laughing with me, and working so hard to make everything happen. As I hand over the reins to Benjamin Roe and the team, I know that AILA Fresh Vic will continue to thrive and inspire under their leadership. This isn’t a goodbye but a transition to new adventures, and I look forward to continuing my journey in landscape architecture and staying connected to our amazing community.

Redevelopment Lead, Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network

The Children’s Hospital at Westmead campus has welcomed many exciting changes this year. Not only has the construction of our new 14-storey building come leaps and bounds, but there have been as many as ten major upgrades to improve experiences for families and staff within the existing hospital. One includes a revitalised ‘KidsPark’ forecourt – our vibrant new main entry point to the campus. This space includes MINT FRESH IGA grocer and the third new playground to be delivered as part of the $619 million NSW Government funded redevelopment. The lawn and outdoor seating offer a comfortable area for people to go outdoors, socialise and have fun, and the surrounding lighting ensures families have the option to play safely into the evening. We recently marked the opening of KidsPark as part of the hospital’s annual Party Day celebrations. Each year on Party Day the hospital comes alive with colour and entertainment to provide families a break from clinical settings and to have some fun. The new forecourt provided the perfect backdrop to host this year’s outdoor activities and visitors, including superheroes, Assistance Dogs Australia, Starlight Children's Foundation Australia, NSW Police Force and more. Thanks to our project partners Health Infrastructure, Scyne Advisory, Kane Constructions Pty Ltd, Ford Civil Contracting, Billard Leece Partnership, McGregor Coxall and to the many consumers and staff for working with us to design and deliver such a beautiful community space. Thank you also to our philanthropic partner Sydney Children's Hospitals Foundation (SCHF)   #NSWHealth #TransformingHealth #PaediatricHealthcare #Infrastructure Sydney Children's Hospitals Network
