  • With student numbers on the rise, Ministry of Education New Zealand needed a solution that would address Meadowbank School’s current needs while also supporting future growth, on Auckland's North Shore. By modernising the school’s infrastructure, we’ve created a learning environment that is both inclusive and future-ready. Since the school was built around the same time as others in the area, we focused on a repetitive, prefabricated design to help keep costs manageable for both the client and the school. To strengthen the connection between students and nature, teaching spaces were thoughtfully placed on the ground floor. The design focuses on open, flexible spaces that easily adapt to different teaching and learning styles. Large windows flood the rooms with natural light, creating a bright, inspiring atmosphere, while strategically located breakout zones offer spaces for everything from group collaboration to independent study. The outcome is a design that not only meets today’s needs but also supports the next generation of learners in an ever-evolving educational landscape. • In the field of design, integrating cultural values can transform spaces from simple functional areas into places filled with meaning. In Aotearoa New Zealand, Te Aranga Principles play an important role. These Māori-driven principles guide us in creating spaces that honour mana whenua, respect the past and leave a lasting legacy for future generations. Our Technical Director for Interior and Te Ao Māori Design, Colette McCartney, shares how we’ve been working alongside our clients to embrace Te Aranga principles, particularly through projects like courthouses, where we’ve included designs to inspire and resonate with the communities they serve. “What excites me most is seeing these principles come to life, especially with the inclusion of traditional Māori elements in modern designs,” says Colette. “As designers, we have the privilege of creating spaces that not only serve their purpose but also celebrate the cultural connections people have with their surroundings.” Learn about some of the key steps Colette and our team take to ensure that each project respects and reflects the communities it serves, while staying grounded in cultural authenticity: https://lnkd.in/dYUjtz6m

  • Located on Auckland's North Shore, Torbay Primary School faced the challenge of making the most of its limited space and unique topography, all while meeting the Ministry of Education New Zealand’s requirements. The goal was to create an adaptable, functional space that could evolve as the school continued to grow. Inside the school, classrooms are designed with sliding doors and movable partitions, making it easy to reconfigure the space to accommodate different group sizes. A standout feature is the third set of stairs, positioned at the centre of the building to replace the traditional external walkway. This addition ensures smooth movement between floors while minimising disruption to ongoing classes. The result is a flexible, future-ready learning environment that not only meets the needs of Torbay Primary School but also integrates with the surrounding natural landscape. • Education is evolving and so are the spaces that shape it. The way we design learning environments today will influence how future generations think, collaborate and grow. From flexible classrooms that adapt to different learning styles to campuses that connect students with nature and technology. Thoughtful design enriches the educational experience by creating high-quality learning spaces that are also economically sustainable. In the coming weeks, we will explore how architecture and design shape inspiring, inclusive and future-ready learning environments, sharing insights from our team and showcasing our projects. Through stories of innovation, sustainability and creativity, we will demonstrate how design is shaping the future of learning and supporting the next generation. 📸 Cooee Primary School Kindergarten, Tasmania, Australia. Building on our recent 'Vertical Schools: Is this the future of education?' campaign, we hosted a workshop in Canberra this week, bringing together educators, government representatives, contractors, and property professionals to discuss vertical education, adaptive reuse, and high-quality social infrastructure. Martin Palmer, Director of Architecture at GHD Design, shared insights from key projects, including vertical schools Wurun Senior Campus in Fitzroy and Fishermans Bend Primary School in Port Melbourne, an innovative adaptive reuse project for the Barwon Water HQ, and a series of seven Victorian public schools designed through a pattern book approach. Using insights from our recent CROSSROADS Report, the 40 attendees explored the future of education through the lenses of community, sustainability, mobility, and adaptive reuse.
