New opportunities for long-term and sustainable growth are gathering momentum across #Gippsland, as was on show at the Yallourn Power Station Training and Careers Fair hosted by EnergyAustralia in August. The Australian Government has granted 12 offshore wind feasibility licenses in Gippsland capable of generating 25GW of electricity – more electricity than Victoria generated in 2023. Industry, workers and community stakeholders spoke with the Net Zero Economy Agency about the move away from coal to offshore wind. Read more below. The Climate Change Authority has released its Sector Pathways Review into the potential technology transition and emissions pathways for the Australian Government to reach #NetZero emissions by 2050. 🇦🇺 The Review has identified multiple pathways to achieving emissions reductions including with existing, mature technologies, such as #solar and #wind for #electricitygeneration and #batteries for #energystorage getting #Australia much of the way to net zero. ☀️ 💨 🔋 💡 Opportunities also exist with the rapid development of emerging low emissions technologies, such as #hydrogen and engineered carbon removals. Chair of the Climate Change Authority, The Hon. Matt Kean, says: "The Authority has charted a course for how Australia can #decarbonise by 2050." "Good progress is being made on decarbonising the energy sector and rolling out firmed renewables. But to achieve a rapid and orderly transition to net zero, all sectors of the economy, along with all levels of government, must plan and act together." “By overcoming the barriers to reducing emissions we can make the Australian economy more prosperous while creating new industries and jobs, improving our energy security, protecting the environment, and reducing the cost of living.” The Net Zero Economy Agency is working to ensure that the #regions, #workers and #communities most affected by Australia’s transition to a net zero emissions economy are empowered to anticipate and respond to the challenges and opportunities that this transformation will bring. We're working across government, engaging with local communities, First Nations communities and with industry to support the regions as we move through this change. New South Wales’s net zero transition is well underway and yesterday was an important milestone for the #Hunter region’s Waratah Super Battery. Located on the former site of the Munmorah coal-fired power station in Colongra, the battery is now registered on the National Electricity Market (NEM). The Waratah Substation has also been energised. The substation connects the 850 megawatt (MW) battery energy storage system (BESS) to the grid and will allow network operators to move greater amounts of electricity over existing transmission lines, with the battery serving as a “shock absorber” during power surges such as those that occur from bush fires or lightning strikes. These two milestones enable progress to more testing and commissioning works ahead of the project powering up next year. The Australian Government has backed this major #infrastructure project with $100 million in funding for what will be the largest standby battery in the Southern Hemisphere once it is switched on in 2025. The Waratah Super Battery and Substation will ensure a more reliable electricity supply, lower prices for consumers and support the network as the Eraring coal generator is retired. #Hunter #BatteryStorage #Electrify #NetZero #RenewableEnergy #NetZeroTransition #transmission #infrastrucutre Government of New South Wales (NSW Government) EnergyCo Transgrid Akaysha Energy
Today we are happy to mark a triple milestone for the Waratah Super Battery project. 1. The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) has registered the Waratah Super Battery as a participant on the National Electricity Market 2. The brand new Waratah Substation, which connects the Waratah Super Battery to the grid, is now energised, paving the way for testing ahead of commercial operation for the project next year 3. The last battery units for the Waratah Super Battery have arrived on site and are lined up for testing Kudos to Akaysha Energy and Transgrid and their delivery partners for achieving this significant milestone for the broader Waratah Super Battery project and the State’s transition to a grid powered by renewables and storage. Last month, the Net Zero Economy Agency travelled to #Adelaide to meet with key stakeholders to discuss supporting workers at AGL’s Torrens Island B gas-fired power station ahead of its closure in 2026. Torrens Island B is located 30 minutes north of the Adelaide CBD and will likely be one of the initial power stations to be considered and assessed for the Energy Industry Jobs Plan. The Energy Industry Jobs Plan is designed to support employees in closing coal-fired and gas-fired power stations and their dependent businesses transition to new employment. The framework to formally establish the Energy Industry Jobs Plan is currently before the #Parliament as part of the broader legislation to establish the Net Zero Economy Authority. During the trip, the Agency engaged with industry, unions, workers and state government departments to understand the employment landscape in Adelaide and surrounding regions. These engagements helped identify pathways for #workers to train and upskill, as well as providing insights into potential future #employment opportunities. The Agency will continue its engagement in Adelaide and strengthen its understanding of workers’ skills and how these can be matched to future job opportunities. #AusGov #AusEnergy #EnergyTransition #NetZero #NetZeroTransition #Workers

The Asia-Pacific Hydrogen Summit & Exhibition is taking place in #Brisbane in September with presentations from world leaders in the #hydrogen industry. Stanwell Corporation Limited is leading the Central Queensland Hydrogen Project (CQ-H2) - Queensland’s largest renewable hydrogen project which when complete will export #RenewableHydrogen via its different carriers, to Japan and Singapore, and large industrial customers in Central Queensland. Over its 30 year lifespan, the Queensland Government projects CQ-H2 will support more than 8,900 jobs, supply $17.2 billion in hydrogen #exports and add $12.4 billion to Queensland’s Gross State Product. Queensland is home to over 50 per cent of Australia’s coal mines and around employs over 50 per cent of people working in coal mining in Australia. The Net Zero Economy Agency is supporting the orderly and positive net zero economic transformation of the region around Gladstone. The #Gladstone and #CentralQueensland region currently produces 40% of Queensland’s #energy and according to the Queensland Government is home to half of the state's 50-plus registered hydrogen projects which, by 2040, are expected to support thousands of skilled jobs. Australia has an abundance of natural resources to make clean hydrogen for our own use and to supply the world.
Hydrogen has the potential to be an important contributor to Australia's net zero transformation.✅💡 Ahead of the Asia-Pacific Hydrogen Summit & Exhibition on 12-13 September, we’re showcasing Stanwell Corporation Limited! ⚡️🦘 Hear from Phil Richardson, General Manager, Hydrogen Projects on how Stanwell Energy is developing into a #RenewableEnergy and storage company, supplying Queensland through the Central Queensland Hydrogen Project and the Central Queensland Hydrogen Hub.
