The QIBN team were on the move for the last two weeks for the First Nations Stronger Business Connect series hosted by the Department of State Development in Cherbourg, Maryborough and Rosemount. These events were excellent! All Indigenous businesses were given 10 minutes with each service provider. The Queensland Indigenous Business Network was invited as a service provider, and we had some engaging, meaningful conversations with the deadly businesses that attended. Did you see us at these events? 🔍Let us know! We hope to see more of these types of events in the future. #QIBN #QueenslandIndigenousBusinessNetwork #StateDevelopmentQLD #FirstNationsStrongerBusinessConnect #Cherbourg #Maryborough #Rosemount #SunshineCoast #MoretonBay #IndigenousBusinessQLD #SpeedNetworking

In 2024, QIBN undertook statewide consultations with over 150 QLD Indigenous businesses. Black Cladding was identified in every consultation as one of the top issues impacting the sector. NIAA's own recent consultation identified that Black Cladding is a significant issue that they will be tackling. Black Cladding is real. It is fraudulent and unethical. Our Indigenous businesses voices must be heard. It is a real barrier to the growth of the Indigenous business sector and erodes integrity and trust. Our businesses are competing with entities set up to unfairly gain access to the Indigenous Procurement spend of government tenders. The 3% spend that could enable a micro or small business to purchase capital, grow and employ more (Indigenous) staff. Verifying Indigenous-owned businesses ensures integrity and trust but should not be a set and forget exercise. A recommendation of QIBN’s consultations is to ensure that we have a process to combat black cladding. As a direct result of this recommendation, QIBN will shortly launch our membership verification process. This will be transparent and QIBN members will be listed on the Indigenous Business Gateway (IBG), our digital platform, providing up-to-date and verified profiles of our Indigenous businesses. We have many examples of success in our sector which should be celebrated. The IPP has contributed to this success. The next phase of business growth and development needs to learn and scaffold against the unethical practices of Black Cladding. If not, it will reflect on all of us.
