Melbourne Cup 2024 brought excitement across many of our communities. At RSL LifeCare Connie Fall in Narrabeen, residents and team members dressed up beautifully for the festivities. A fashion parade saw everyone’s style on display, with prizes awarded to the best-dressed female resident, male resident, and team member, presented by our CEO Janet Muir. Residents enjoyed a delicious lunch, whilst watching the race that stops the nation, learnt about Melbourne Cup history and took part in trivia. We are pleased to announce the Board of Directors of RSL LifeCare has appointed current director Sangeeta Venkatesan as Chair, effective this week, making Ms. Venkatesan the first woman to hold this prestigious position in the organisation. Ms. Venkatesan is a distinguished and highly accomplished professional, with over 25 years of experience in the financial services sector. Last week, our RSL ANZAC Village team members held a special lunch to celebrate the very first National War Widows Day. The delicious lunch was enjoyed by 30 residents who shared memories and experiences of their loves, finding connection through their shared journeys. Several residents expressed how meaningful the conversations were, reflecting the warmth and understanding felt throughout the afternoon. As a tribute to all who have lost a loved one to service, a wattle tree – the symbol of war widows – was presented to the residents and has now been planted near Remembrance Walk in RSL ANZAC Village. #rsllifecare #warwidowsday #retirementliving #community

Today marks War Widows Day, a time to recognise the bravery and sacrifices of war widows and widowers in Australia. War widows and veterans families have been part of the fabric of Australia, making valuable contributions to the community for more than 100 years. Many of RSL LifeCare community members are war widows, and we honour their strength and resilience across our communities today. We invite you to read the heartfelt story of Grace Lane, reflecting on her life with her husband, Harold Lane, who served in World War II. "Being a war widow is an important part of my identity, and I feel fortunate to have the gold card because of Harold’s service. The card provides financial and medical support, but the emotional journey of losing someone who has given so much for their country is something that never truly leaves you. I believe it’s crucial to have a day like War Widows Day, to honour not just the sacrifices made by those who served, but also the sacrifices of those left behind. From surviving World War II in Germany to building a new life in Australia, RSL LifeCare resident and volunteer Wera Gazecki's incredible journey is one of courage, resilience, and giving back. Now, at 94 years old, she volunteers at the RSL ANZAC Village War Museum to share her powerful experiences with others. "I went through the war and the hardships that followed. The aftermath was worse than the war for me. I volunteer at the War Museum because I want to share my experiences with those who want to understand what it was really like for people.
