In March 2023, the Smart Energy Council led a delegation of 34 Australian companies to India, opening doors to over AU$1.4 billion in new business opportunities. Today, I'm thrilled to announce another significant step forward – we've just signed an MoU with the Karnataka Renewable Energy Development Ltd, Government of Karnataka, a key agency of the state government. Karnataka, with its 65+ million population, is already sourcing over 50% of its energy needs from smart renewable sources! This partnership is a game changer, not just for Australia and India, but for the global renewable energy transition. A huge congratulations to the Australia India Business Council for hosting a spectacular annual gala dinner. And a heartfelt thank you to the Indian High Commissioner to Australia, HE Gopal Baglay, NSW Treasurer Daniel Mookhey, and all parties who backed this crucial business-to-business collaboration. Across states and countries, we're driving the future of energy. @Irfan Malik (MAICD) @Andrew Charlton @Jodie Mckay

Well done to the Smart Energy Council for organising a meaningful industry forum yesterday on the clean energy transition and the potential for WA to remain relevant as an export-dependent economy. Some of the more pertinent points for mine: · WA needs to provide greater investment certainty in 3 areas: 🎯 Setting firm emissions targets to show investors we’re serious, including in the broader energy sector (if coal-rich Queensland can do it, we can too) 🧮 Less complexity in rules governing the electricity market, and longer-term investment attraction via things like the reserve capacity mechanism which underpins new generation build (and long duration storage) 🗼 More funding and more urgent funding for infrastructure; mainly transmission, but also plug-and-play industrial zones including in Collie – a point well made by steve mccartney · Don’t think WA can shirk the decarbonisation issue. Most major economic blocks are either imposing, or considering imposing, carbon emission tariffs and tighter reporting requirements, which means it will be harder/more expensive to sell our wares overseas if they’re not green-powered. Give your kids a future. 👶 · Government can help with: 🫂 Earlier community engagement and transmission and infrastructure planning 💰 Money for transmission 📐 Common planning laws/approaches 👩🔬 Funding more people for Western Power 🚦 More transparency in connection timeframes and outcomes and standardisation of major electrical equipment · Industry can help with: 🧧 Renewable energy developer codes of conduct 🔗 Helping Government agencies solve supply chain constraints 💲Taking more risk, including with developing non-network solutions 🤼 Genuine developer-led community engagement – ala the Queensland model; including clarifying/unifying compensation frameworks for landowners (transmission and possibly development) 💚 Green iron is a massive opportunity for Australia to boost returns on its resources (but also not see its major export industry slowly fade away.) ♻️ Recycling is another untapped opportunity. Did I mention Queensland? They will have up to 14 solar panel recycling facilities by 2025 under the Solar Stewardship Program. Globally only ~40% of copper is recycled. Thanks for expertly hosting our panel Kylie Turner. And yes, it was held at the zoo. Gratuitous picture of a giraffe. #wem #madeinwa #renewables #exports #jobs #energy #zoo Wilf J. “Large-scale renewable energy projects will set WA up for success and provide new, diverse, and sustainable economic opportunities and jobs for future generations — but we must get it right.” Miranda Jane Taylor, Wind With Purpose VP Public Affairs and Development, joined Wayne Smith, Acting CEO of Smart Energy Council, Geoff Baker MLA, Member for South Perth, steve mccartney, State Secretary at Australian Manufacturing Workers' Union, Lucile Bourguet, Manager Carbon and Climate Change at Fortescue, and Laurent Trost, COO at Yara Pilbara, to discuss 'Visions for the Future of WA' as part of the opening session at the Smart Energy Council WA Renewables & Clean Exports Summit yesterday. In her discussion, Miranda highlighted that advancing WA’s renewable energy build-out requires strong partnerships between the WA Government, industry, independent experts, research and innovation organisations, and local communities. Government investment, particularly in shared infrastructure, R&D, technology, innovation, local manufacturing, and skills development, will be vital to support industry efforts. Miranda further emphasised that a local wind supply chain in the South-West could support these large-scale renewable energy projects. Combined with green metals production in Collie, the future economy of the South-West lies in secure, well-paid green manufacturing jobs. This offers an incredible opportunity for WA workers and the broader community to develop the renewable energy projects and infrastructure necessary to create thousands of jobs and help WA achieve decarbonisation.

🌱 Exciting Insights from the WA Renewables and Clean Export Summit! 🌍 I had the privilege of attending the Smart Energy Council’s WA Renewables and Clean Export Summit on 10 October, and it was an inspiring experience, I’m still buzzing! As someone passionate about sustainability and clean energy, this Summit gave me an insight into its complex nature and marked the beginning of my education in renewable energy. The speakers provided valuable insights into WA’s potential to lead Australia’s green energy future, highlighting the opportunities, challenges, considerations and existing projects. Some of the topics covered were green iron, green ammonia, vanadium batteries, urban mining, Govt policy & funding and large-scale solar projects. It was clear that collaboration between government, industry, NGOs, and the community is crucial for WA to take the lead, starting with legislated targets. So, what are some of the opportunities, challenges and considerations: 💡 Opportunities - Green data centres: Growing foreign demand and investment - Skilled Workforce: WA's shortage in certain skilled areas, opportunity to upskill for clean energy projects and build the future green energy workforce. - Vanadium batteries: have 30+ year life, fully recyclable (circular economy), longer usage hours in development. They can provide more reliable storage - Urban mining: Recycling of the 600k of panels from WA homes each year, reduce mining of the minerals required. WA doesn’t have recycling facilities. - Thermal storage: can provide up to 15 hours of storage, uses steam to generate power, reducing reliance on gas. - Growing the production and demand for green ore and green ammonia. 🔧 Challenges - WA doesn’t have legislated targets for renewable energy and emission reduction - Infrastructure gaps: WA's geography and remote areas can make it costly to develop a flexible common user infrastructure. - Energy storage and reliability: More investments in battery storage and grid-stabilising technologies to support large-scale renewables. 📍 Considerations - Indigenous Land Rights and Community Engagement: Proper consultation, fair agreements, and respectful collaboration with Indigenous communities. - Financing and Investment: Securing consistent funding and attracting international investors to WA’s renewable sector. - Communications and education: Develop clear and simple communications for the WA community to drive understanding of the why and importance of green and renewable energy to WA's future, to counter misinformation and old assumptions. The energy transition isn’t just about reducing emissions—it’s about creating economic opportunities, jobs, and a sustainable future for all. 🌍 #madeinwa #renewables #greenenergy #reduceemissions
