SMEC South Africa is proud to announce that the Montrose Interchange Upgrade project, initiated by our client Trans African Concessions (Pty) Ltd., has received top honours at the prestigious CESA - Consulting Engineers South Africa Engineering Excellence Awards in the category of Projects Valued Between R50 Million and R250 Million. The Montrose Interchange Upgrade, a key component of the Maputo Development Corridor, was undertaken to address the increasing traffic demands driven by tourism and trade between South Africa, Mozambique and Botswana. The original at-grade T-junction, built in the 1970s, was no longer adequate, prompting the need for a comprehensive infrastructure solution. Our role as the lead consulting engineer spanned the entire project lifecycle from inception in January 2018 to completion in September 2023. The project involved the realignment and upgrade of 600 metres of the existing road, construction of four new interchange ramps, and the widening of the Crocodile River Bridge from two lanes to five. We are incredibly proud of the positive social impact this project has had on the Mbombela communities, including job creation and the development of local SMMEs. This award is a testament to the dedication and expertise of the SMEC team and our commitment to engineering positive change. #engineeringpositivechange #simplifycomplexity #SMEC #SouthAfrica

A History of excellence: SMEC’s origins date back 75 years to the iconic Snowy Mountains Hydroelectric Scheme. The scheme was a multi-purpose project undertaken between 1949 and 1974. The project brought together over 100,000 workers from 30 countries who constructed 16 major dams, seven power stations, one pumping station, 145 km of tunnels, 80 km of aqueducts and 2,000 km of roads. The innovation, resilience and achievements of these early pioneers form the core of our organisation and continue to shape our future. With our rebrand launch we celebrate 75 years of excellence and look forward to another 75 years of engineering positive change Learn more about our story: https://lnkd.in/g8vNwgsm #engineeringpositivechange #bedifferent

Celebrating a milestone on the Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) East project! SMEC is contributing to reshaping Victoria's public transport network through our involvement in the initial and early works design for this iconic project. This transformative initiative will enhance the way people move and better connect communities. Our extensive experience in complex multidisciplinary design projects supports Laing O'Rourke and the Suburban Rail Loop Authority in successfully delivering this critical infrastructure to the community. #EngineeringPositiveChange #Transport #RailandMetro

We’re only halfway through 2024 and have already reached some major milestones. Construction is underway at all 6 SRL East station sites and the train stabling site in Heatherton. We’ve chatted to hundreds of community members, who are helping shape the vision for the future of their neighbourhoods. We welcomed our Tunnels South partners on site, who are preparing to deliver 16km of twin tunnels from Cheltenham to Glen Waverley. We’ve started planning the neighbourhoods around each SRL East station, and expressions of interest are open to build these world-class facilities. Stay tuned for more progress updates!
