Creating a happier and healthier Australia by enriching communities through surfing.

About us

Surfing Australia is a National Sporting Organisation that was formed in 1963 to establish, guide and promote the development of surfing in Australia. Surfing Australia is the representative body on the International Surfing Association (ISA) of which there are 86 member countries and is recognised by the Australian Sports Commission, the Australian Olympic Committee and is a member of the Water Safety Council of Australia. Surfing is not just a sport, it’s one of the most desirable lifestyles in the world. With 85% of Australians living less than 50km from the coast it’s accessible to most people, and once learnt it’s a skill for life. There is momentum behind the sport in Australia from grass-roots community and participation, through the surfing events pathway, to our world-class elite athletes. Surfing’s inclusion at the Tokyo Olympics is testament to the groundswell of support of the sport globally. Our purpose is to create a healthier and happier Australia by enriching communities through surfing. Our vision is to continue to be one of Australia’s most loved sports, creating authentic heroes and champions to inspire the next generation to learn a skill for life.

Our Surf For Life program heads west for a day of sharing the stoke. In collaboration with Woolworths Supermarkets and Clontarf Foundation, Surfing Australia kicked off the Western Australia leg of our celebrated Surf For Life program with an epic day of waves, high-fives and smiles at Mandurah Beach, WA.  The session started with our participants enjoying a bit of beach footy and then learning how to surf in idyllic, playful pointbreak conditions. The day ended with a well-earned beach BBQ to relieve the post-surf hunger.   Surf For Life is an impactful initiative that brings the thrill of surfing to those who mightn’t usually have easy access to this sea-soaked lifestyle. Our current program focusses on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander boys and young men. We’re extremely appreciative of our valued partners Woolworths and Clontarf Foundation, who help share the surf stoke.  “Surfing is more than a sport or activity,” says Surfing Australia’s Participation and Programs Manager, Blake Whittaker. “Being in the ocean, learning something as fun as surfing and connecting with nature fosters good mental health,” he says. “And when you stand up for the first time, wow, there’s no other feeling like it!”  Thanks to Mandurah Surf School for running the Surf For Life session.  Want to know more? At this year's @skullcandyozgromopen, Surfing Australia held another valuable session for our 'Parents Program', educating parents and guardians of our nationally categorised #HighPerformance athletes on needs and challenges athletes face throughout their young careers. Thanks to Sport Integrity Australia's Mathew Sinclair for taking us through the importance of keeping Surfing safe, fun, fair & inclusive for children and young people. Performance Pathway Manager, Clancy Dawson, talked through the role parents play in an HP surfer's journey. And Performance Support & Podium Manager, Eric Haakonssen, shared his wealth of knowledge on concussion, injuries and taking care of your body. All done to see our athletes thrive in and out of the water, to be the world's best surfers and people. #surfing #SurfingAustralia #SportIntegrity #SharingTheStoke #HPP #BestSurfers #BestPeople #SafeSport

At Surfing Australia, we’re all about sharing the stoke of surfing. Our Surf for Life program, generously supported by Woolworths Supermarkets, extends that stoke to those who mightn’t usually get the opportunity to experience it. As surfers, we know that surfing is so much more than being a sport and activity. It also: 🌊 fosters good mental health; 🌊 helps build community; and 🌊 challenges us to lean into courage. In 2024, we are visiting 12 locations around the nation in partnership with Clontarf Foundation, so Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander boys and young men can revel in a day of surfing to return home with great memories, new mates, and a surf-stoked smile. We recently took Palm Beach Currumbin School students to the playful waves of Currumbin Alley on the Gold Coast. Sunny skies and 3-4ft offshore waves, and lots of post-surf Woolworths snacks, made for a day to remember. “The Surf for Life participants had such an epic experience. With great weather and quality waves, the joy is sure to follow those kids from the ocean back onto land in a meaningful way. We look forward to spreading that joy to even more beaches in 2024,” says Blake Whittaker, Surfing Australia’s Participation and Programs manager. A huge thanks to Woolworths for partnering with Surfing Australia and the Clontarf Foundation for this ever-important program that harnesses the power of the ocean. If you want to know more about the program, contact Blake on info@surfingaustralia.com or (02) 6671 0000. #surfing #SurfForLife #Woolworths
