Metro fans with green thumbs, tonight is your night! Sydney Metro is trialling gardens of native planting to create urban biodiversity and this evening Gardening Australia explores how our landscaping at Hills Showground Station demonstrates that creating luscious, long-lasting landscapes is easily possible in public spaces. Tune in to ABC at 7:30pm tonight, the episode is also available to watch on iView. Sydney Metro’s urban planting trial went into the ground in August 2022 and involved around 110 species and varieties of largely native plants in nine different mixes across 32 purpose designed garden beds.

First look 👀 Excavation is complete at Sydney Metro West’s Burwood North station site and to celebrate we invited community members behind the gates earlier this month. Top sights included: -A freshly excavated 29-metre-deep box-like structure that is 25 metres wide and 194 metres long and is where the future Burwood North station will be built. -Sydney Metro West’s fully lined tunnels and crossover cavern that will allow trains to cross to the other track during maintenance or in an emergency. -A new pedestrian tunnel eight metres below Parramatta Road that will provide direct access to the station from the south. Find out how Sydney Metro is transforming 130-year-old railway stations into the smartest and safest transport hubs in the country 🤩 📍🔎🧐👉 Mechanical gap filler technology has been installed at eight Southwest Metro stations between Marrickville and Bankstown. This Australian-first innovation will eliminate the gap created between the train and the curved platforms on the Bankstown line, allowing safe and easy access for all passengers. At Wiley Park and Bankstown where platform gap is minimal, a durable rubber gap filler will be used to minimise the platform gap. For more: https://lnkd.in/geZgDvnh

Parramatta here we come! Tunnel boring machines (TBMs) Betty and Dorothy are headed for the heart of Parramatta as they continue to carve out the brand-new Sydney Metro West tunnels deep below the city. The TBMs recently broke through solid rock walls to arrive at the junction caverns below Clyde. These caverns will be a major interchange point once the new railway is up and running, as it is where trains will be able to veer off to enter the above ground stabling and maintenance facility when not in service. More than 80 per cent of tunnelling for Sydney Metro West has been completed since tunnelling began on the project in April 2023. For more: https://lnkd.in/gXQWHge6

Australia’s most advanced railway is taking shape in Sydney’s southwest. But while our team of 800-plus workers are on site every day working to deliver the complex Southwest Metro conversion, the significant extension will take longer than expected and is now scheduled for completion in 2026. Recent progress to ready 10 stations from Marrickville to Bankstown for fast and reliable metro services includes: ✅ Installation of 360 safety screen doors to keep passengers away from tracks. ✅ 170 mechanical gap fillers installed. This specially designed technology is made for the curved southwest stations and will eliminate the gap between platform and train. ✅ 5.8 kilometres of segregation fencing installed to separate the existing freight line and the adjacent metro corridor between Sydenham and Bankstown. ✅ 22.5 kilometres of first-of-its-kind security fencing in place. It features a cutting-edge intrusion and object detection system and will protect the boundary of the Southwest metro rail corridor. Sydney Metro would like to thank south-west Sydney communities for their patience as we deliver their city-shaping new metro line. For more on recent progress: https://lnkd.in/d3Jy2d8m

Solid rock walls don’t stand a chance against tunnel boring machines (TBMs) Dorothy and Betty! The mega machines have broken through giant caverns 24-metres below the surface at Clyde, taking the tunnelling tally for the total 24-kilometre Sydney Metro West project to more than 80 per cent ✅ The work doesn’t stop here for TBMs Dorothy and Betty. The TBMs will make their way west to build the next section of tunnels before reaching the future Parramatta metro station by mid-year. Did you know women make up only two percent of trades working on construction sites in Australia? Sydney Metro’s first Try a Trade Day is one of the many ways we’re working to increase that number 💪 More than 50 female job seekers open to a career in construction were given the opportunity to try their hand at different trades in carpentry, electrical, civil construction and plumbing under the guidance of qualified TAFE NSW teachers. Watch the video to hear from Sydney Metro’s Head of Project Delivery Angela Jeffery on why events like Try a Trade are vital to increasing women’s participation in the construction industry.
