Our vision is for a world in which no person is needlessly blind or visually impaired.
About us
The Fred Hollows Foundation is inspired by the work of the late Professor Fred Hollows (1929-1993). Working in more than 25 countries, our vision is for a world where no one is needlessly blind, and Indigenous Australians enjoy the same health and life expectancy as other Australians. Fred believed local people were best placed to deliver health care to their communities. The Foundation seeks to strengthen and sustain local systems, both internationally and in our Indigenous Australia Program. We bring resources, knowledge and capacity building to partners who contribute their own knowledge, capabilities and resources. We work together to achieve our ambitious goal. Authorised by A. The fastest growing unmet needs for Assistive Technology (AT), such as glasses and hearing aids, are among older people, and we encourage governments, donors and other stakeholders to consider this often neglected demographic in policy and programming decisions. Comprehensive AT policies that cater to diverse age groups, from childhood through to older adulthood, are vital. Casey McCowan, Vânia de la Fuente-Núñez, MD, MA, and Lisa Johnson highlight this point, discuss Australia's commitment in the Pacific region, and explore the transformative power of assistive tech in enhancing independence and participation worldwide in this blog dedicated to celebrating the First World Day for Assistive Technology. “Assistive Technology is often a low priority for governments, development agencies, and donors,” say Casey McCowan, Vânia de la Fuente-Núñez, MD, MA, and Lisa Johnson from The Fred Hollows Foundation. “Underfunding, limited healthcare infrastructure, and a lack of trained staff hinder access to necessary devices.” https://lnkd.in/gPNQUqV7

Today was an incredible day as Jennifer Gersbeck and I had the honor of meeting Dr. Epsy Campbell Barr - former Vice President of Costa Rica 🇨🇷 and president of the United Nations Permanent Forum on People of African Descent and is the founder of the Global Coalition Against Systemic Racism and for Reparations. Her passion for creating positive change in our society is truly inspiring - including her personal seven point value framework: Vision, Mission, Knowledge, Discipline, Passion, Empathy and Leadership. From her dedication to education to her tireless efforts in promoting equality and social justice, Dr. Campbell is a true role model. It was an absolute pleasure to have a conversation with her and learn from her wisdom. Thank you Epsy for a huge injection of inspiration during the The Fred Hollows Foundation session at International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) 2030 In Sight conference. Thank you for your incredible work and for being an inspiration to us all. #Inspired #InSightLive #Leadership #GenderEquality #GenderEquityInEyeHealth

"Good surgery... is a process that’s going to go on as those people are training others, and those people are going to be training others, and so on..." Fred told Channel Nine in 1992. 🌟 We're carrying on his 'teach a man to fish' ethos and, last year alone, we helped train 36,804 people, including surgeons, nurses and teachers. 👩⚕️ Thanks to people like YOU, Fred's legacy goes on! 🙏 READ about all the amazing work we did together in 2023 at https://lnkd.in/gTF4NKE2 #impact #results

We're excited to announce that Dr. Vânia de la Fuente-Núñez, Healthy Ageing Senior Advisor at The Fred Hollows Foundation, will be speaking at the upcoming IAPB Conference in Mexico. Don't miss her insightful session ‘How can eye health advance healthy ageing?’ on 27 June from 15:15 to 16:15 local time in the Changemakers Room! Seventy three per cent of avoidable vision loss occurs in people who are 50 and over. Good eye health is key for us to reap the benefits of our increased longevity. Yet, older populations remain largely invisible in eye healthcare efforts as reflected in the report Connecting Healthy Ageing and Vision, which you can read at https://lnkd.in/gyHfy2Un On April 17-18, in Manila, The Fred Hollows Foundation and the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB), with support from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and the Australia-ASEAN Council, brought together leading organizations dedicated to ageing and vision in Asia and the Pacific. This landmark event produced the Manila Statement, which outlines essential actions to enhance eye health for older populations. Older People are central to achieving the 2030 in Sight goals. The Manila Statement is a crucial step in advancing the global vision agenda and making healthy ageing a reality for millions. Let’s continue this important conversation and drive action together. #EyeHealth #HealthyAgeing #2030inSight #VisionForEveryone cc Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade , International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) , CBM Christian Blind Mission , International Federation on Ageing , HelpAge International
