Variants that affect splicing typically result in a milder phenotype in Long QT syndrome, as opposed to severe loss-of-function missense variants that display a dominant-negative effect, often leading to more severe Long QT syndrome. By combining RNA splicing assay with my KCNH2 patch clamp assay based on Nanion Technologies SyncroPatch APC system, we have demonstrated that the splice-altering KCNH2 variant causing a large in-frame deletion can also produce a dominant negative effect on Kv11.1 channel function and result in a severe LQTS phenotype. It is a collaborative effort between hospitals from Saudi Arabia, the NHS in the UK and the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute, including co-first author Gunjan Zhao from Diane Fatkin laboratory, who performed the splicing assay. Women’s heart health is more affected by lifestyle factors, such as an unhealthy diet and lack of exercise, than men. More than 175,000 people were tracked over 11 years in a study presented at the American College of Cardiology’s Scientific Sessions. The authors say a person’s sex should be considered during routine health screenings and women need to keep a close eye on their heart health as they age. In honour of International Women's Day, our Sydney office co-hosted an event with Barrenjoey. I was privileged to facilitate an incredible conversation with our special guests Sally Dunwoodie AO and Kavitha Muthiah from the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute, who highlighted a critical yet often overlooked issue: women and heart disease. I left the conversation optimistic that with more women continuing to enter, lead and pioneer in STEM, law and finance, women are becoming more empowered to take control of our own future.

Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute shared an update on their spider venom breakthrough 🕷️. Thanks to a significant funding boost from the Government, the Institute’s scientists are moving ahead with Phase 1 Safety Trials of a new drug derived from a protein in spider venom called Hi1a. It is hoped that this life-saving drug will help first responders prevent long-term heart damage in heart attack victims, while also serving as a groundbreaking therapy for heart transplant surgery 🧡 You can read the update here: https://hubs.la/Q03csP6C0 #MedicalBreakthrough #HeartHealth #VictorChangInstitute

Celebrating 5 incredible years at the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute! 🎉 It's been a journey of growth, discovery, collaboration and resilience. Despite the challenges of COVID-19 in 2020 and 2021, I'm proud to share some highlights: - Secured 5 grants, received multiple national and international accolades, and contributed to 14 peer-reviewed publications (with 3 more under review!). I'm continuously building my independence and empowering my team, sharing the road with my superstar RA Chris Thekkedam. - Delivered the prestigious Paul Korner presentation to my institution this week, receiving fantastic feedback. A truly memorable experience! - Co-supervised Nicholas Murray throughout his PhD at UNSW for 4 year, who's thesis has been highly commended. Congrats mate! - Successfully mentored a year 11-12 student in bulk RNAseq data analysis, honing my teaching and mentorship skills. Witnessing they growth was incredibly rewarding! - Currently preparing 3 manuscripts on cardiovascular disease modelling, leveraging stem cells and diverse organisms like zebrafish. Exciting breakthroughs on the horizon! 👀 - Actively pursuing EOI grant and fellowship applications and looking forward to what the future holds. Grateful for the opportunities and support from my colleagues, collaborators and mentors at the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute and beyond! 🙏 Here's to many more years of impactful research! 🤩 UNSW Medicine & Health
