The New York Post has shared our research into the state of work for Australian Gen Zs, which has found around twice as many young females are leaving their jobs due to stress and customer abuse compared to young males. As young people start the new year entering new jobs, often in industries they’ve never worked in before, it’s a timely reminder to treat them with kindness and empathy so work can be a positive place for them where they can grow and gain skills to help them succeed in life.

  • One of the biggest issues hitting youth wellbeing at the moment is the cost of living, housing and renting, with our latest youth research finding a rapidly rising tide of young people who think they will never be able to afford a home in the future. But it's impacting young people in the here and now too as high rental prices delay many young people from moving out of home while also driving many to return to living with their parents to ease the financial pressure on themselves as they try and balance their work, study and social lives. Year13 Co-Founder Saxon Phipps said: "As house prices increase so too does the amount of young people who give up on the dream of owning one and this is playing out in the data with the large year on year spike in young people who see themselves as renting for life."

As school wraps up for the year and ATARs are released tomorrow our career data has revealed the most popular careers for school students in 2024, with psychologist emerging as the number one most popular profession! "We know there’s a shortage of psychologists at the moment", Year13 Co-Founder Saxon Phipps said. "To see psychologist as the most popular career for Australian school students in 2024 will no doubt be very welcome news to the profession and to people who need these vital mental health services." Australian Psychological Society chief executive officer Dr Zena Burgess said growing interest in psychology was no surprise. "There are lots of people who wish to be a psychologist. Patient demand is very high, and increasingly, people can’t afford treatment due to the cost of living pressures and slow progress in mental health reform."

At the Tech Council of Australia's National Summit, we had the opportunity to share an update on our Virtual Work Experience program, which aims to address the tech workforce shortage in Australia. In less than a year, over 15,000 youth have participated in the online initiative. In the last month, we've upgraded the experiences to increase engagement and gamification, and rolled them out to 1250+ schools across Australia via the Career Tools platform. We're pleased to share that included in the updated library are two new experiences, sponsored by Commonwealth Bank - UX/UI Designer and Platform Engineer. Thank you to our tech partners Tech Council of Australia, Commonwealth Bank, Microsoft and nbn® Australia for supporting the program and helping us build a talent pipeline that's equipped to meet the needs of Australia’s evolving tech landscape.

This week, Year13 launched 'It's Giving, Giving Back', a national campaign in partnership with the Australian Government Department of Social Services (DSS) and UM Australia that aims to encourage young Australians to volunteer within their local community. At Year13, we’re all about helping young people prepare to take their next steps in life, and volunteering is the perfect way to gain valuable skills, find new passions and connect with people. We’re hoping to raise awareness, spark interest, and get young Aussies thinking differently about how they can make a difference through volunteering. It’s more than just giving your time—it’s about building your future through experiences, connections, and personal growth. Check out a sneak preview of the campaign below.
