What is "Sustainable Development"? What do we mean when we say we should become sustainable? The earlier concept of sustainable development referred to being able to meet current needs without compromising on the future. It embodies the idea of ensuring that our actions today do not deplete or harm the resources and opportunities available to future generations. This principle, often attributed to the Brundtland Commission's definition of sustainable development, emphasizes the importance of balance and foresight in decision-making. It calls for a holistic approach that considers environmental, social, and economic factors to ensure that progress is not achieved at the expense of the well-being of future generations. In practice, this concept guides policies, practices, and initiatives aimed at promoting long-term prosperity, environmental stewardship, social equity, and resilience. It underscores the need for responsible resource management, conservation, innovation, and inclusive development strategies that empower communities and safeguard the planet for generations to come.
