“Security” is the buzzword of the freshly inaugurated Polish EU Presidency. ⚡But what will it mean for energy transition and climate action? This is what we would like to see 👇

We are Europe's leading NGO coalition fighting dangerous climate change.
About us
Climate Action Network (CAN) Europe is Europe's largest coalition working on climate and energy issues. With over 200 member organisations in more than 40 European countries, representing over 44 million citizens, CAN Europe works to prevent dangerous climate change and promote sustainable climate and energy policy in Europe. The vision of CAN is a world actively striving towards and achieving the protection of the global climate in a manner that promotes equity and social justice between peoples, sustainable development of all communities, and protection of the global environment. CAN Europe empowers civil society organisations to influence the design and development of effective climate change policy in Europe, both in the European Union as well as in its Member States and in European countries outside the EU. CAN Europe is recognised as an established civil society voice in both EU policy and the UN climate negotiations. We work to influence decision-makers at the heart of Brussels while supporting our diverse network of members to campaign from grassroots up to governmental level in Members States. CAN Europe works on a broad range of issues including climate, energy and finance policies, to contribute to the zero carbon transition that should allow us to avoid dangerous climate change. We do that with a great team of experts in the CAN Europe secretariat as well as with hundreds of staff from our member organisations, that engage through working groups, mailing lists, conference calls and our bi-annual General Assemblies.

🚨New Gas Factsheet Out 🚨 Fossil gas is fueling the climate and energy crises, yet the EU remains dependent on it, ignoring that: ❌It exacerbates environmental and climate impacts - composed mostly of methane, the second most potent greenhouse gas. ❌It drives high energy prices - the EU is still very reliant on expensive fossil gas imports, leading to high energy prices and price volatility. ❌It undermines energy security - continued imports from Russia and costly US LNG create new dependencies and risks. The EU now has a critical opportunity to phase out fossil gas! 📢 Read our latest factsheet to uncover the true story of fossil gas and the path to a fossil-free future 👉 https://lnkd.in/dPcUy4ne #BeyondFossilGas

The stakes could not be higher. The climate crisis is an existential threat, and every year of inaction brings us closer to irreversible tipping points. Europe must rise to the occasion, not just for its own citizens but for the billions of people around the world whose futures depend on collective action. The new Trump era may mark a new chapter in what is a difficult period for international climate diplomacy, but it is not the end of the story. By responding with unity, ambition, and leadership, Europe can turn this moment of crisis into a catalyst for climate action. The Paris Agreement—the planet—and humanity, depend on it.

🚨 The European Commission's Competitiveness Compass is out! It is not the rules that protect people, climate and the environment that are holding European companies back, but rather the lack of investment and high energy prices driven by the EU’s fossil gas dependency. Framing regulation as one of the primary obstacles to competitiveness is a dangerous misstep from the Commission. 👇 Read more from CAN Europe experts Greg Van Elsen, Isabelle Brachet, Sven Harmeling & Cornelia Maarfield. ➡️ Read our full reaction: https://lnkd.in/dEppN8im #competitivenesscompass #competitiveness #EuropeanUnion #climateaction #justtransition #energytransition

Switzerland’s Climate Accountability: Time to Act The judgment in the case of KlimaSeniorinnen Schweiz is on the agenda of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, which monitors the execution of the judgments of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR), during its meeting from March 4-6, 2025. The KlimaSeniorinnen, along with a broad coalition of non-governmental organisations, have submitted a communication to the attention of the Committee of Ministers, responding to Switzerland's Action Report. Both the KlimaSeniorinnen and the NGO coalition point out that Switzerland has not yet remedied the violation of Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights as established by the ECtHR. In 2024, the @ECHR_CEDH held Switzerland accountable for failing to meet its climate obligations. Yet, as a new joint submission supported by CAN Europe and 30+ organizations reveals, Switzerland has not aligned its actions with the court’s judgment or the urgent need to address the #ClimateCrisis. All States have a duty to act—and Switzerland is no exception. It’s time for the Swiss government to: ✅ Calculate a fair, quantified, and science-based national carbon budget aligned with the 1.5°C global warming limit. ✅ Adjust current climate targets to reflect this budget and meet international standards. ✅ Commit to real, impactful climate action to safeguard our planet. Switzerland must step up and comply with its obligations. Together, we’re urging the Swiss government and the @coe to ensure meaningful action on climate. 👉 https://lnkd.in/eMhXs4Nh
