‼️👷 Today we’ve sent dozens of paper houses to decision makers in the EU’s Special Housing Committee to encourage and inspire them to make deep home renovations the top priority during their mandate. 🔨 Why? Because the time is now to pour their energy into solving one of Europe’s most pressing challenges: the state of our building stock. Delivering energy-efficient homes that are powered by renewable energy are key for social justice and the climate ⬇️ - lowering the EU’s energy demand - boosting energy security - cutting carbon emissions - lifting people out of energy poverty Better homes help us build better lives! 🎴 What does this action entail? Decision makers will be able to renovate their paper house by collecting solutions that will help them improve the energy efficiency of their paper home - one sticker at a time ➕ experience the savings that can be achieved. Build Better Lives
Non-profit Organizations
The Build Better Lives Campaign aims to ensure decent, affordable and energy efficient homes for all.
About us
Build Better Lives aims to ensure decent, affordable and energy efficient homes and buildings for all. It brings together over 90 social justice, housing, climate, and youth civil society organisations, in a pan-European, people-oriented campaign for a socially just built environment that lifts millions out of energy poverty. Better buildings build better lives through creating safer, healthier and more comfortable environments where many of us work, play and live. More energy efficient buildings reduces our energy consumption, which lowers our energy bills along with greenhouse gas emissions. This all starts with policy and political will. Governments need to implement EU and national legislations around building renovation and heating decarbonisation in a manner that is inclusive and will deliver benefits for all.

This week the we delivered dozens of paper houses to EU decision makers for a DIY home renovation from their desk. The first renovation tool to collect and stick is the mighty one-stop-shop! One-stop-shops are essential in making energy efficient homes a reality for all. Especially for vulnerable households. They offer: 💎 tailored guidance and advice 🥸 energy audits 🧧 help in accessing financial support 👷 connections to reliable contractors —all in one place ‼️ They are key in aligning the EU’s social inclusion, energy efficiency, and climate policies. But to succeed they must be well-resourced, easily accessible, and managed on a not-for-profit basis. 👉 La nuova azione della campagna: https://lnkd.in/dTwQP8AW #EfficienzaEnergetica #NuovaEdilizia #Sostenibilità #PovertàEnergetica Climate Action Network (CAN) Europe Friends of the Earth Europe European Community Land Trust Network Youth and Environment Europe (YEE) WECF International Red Cross EU Office E3G European Federation of Building and Woodworkers (EFBWW) Energy Cities Climate Alliance ECOS European Public Health Alliance (EPHA) European Environmental Bureau EAPN - European Anti Poverty Network REScoop.eu Institute for Human Rights and Business SOLIDAR & SOLIDAR Foundation Habitat for Humanity Europe & Middle East ICLEI European Federation of Public Service Unions (EPSU) Equinox: Racial Justice Initiative FEDARENE EuroHealthNet Beyond Fossil Fuels CEE Bankwatch Network Caritas Europa Eurocities

When heating a home is a luxury for so many, it’s clear we need change. Last week, Mónica Vidal and I discussed on Energ' Ethic Podcast solutions developed with a coalition of NGOs to tackle this crisis and Build Better Lives. In the meantime, a new JRC article showed how deep the heating challenge is, and how fast we need to accelerate. But change isn’t only driven by climate and social justice campaigners, nor only by policy and regulation. Business-led initiatives are stepping up too. They prove how organic the call for change is. And that's refreshing. This is where the Bring Heat Home campaign comes in. Launched by Euroheat & Power, the campaign aims to: - Decarbonise heating and cooling, which accounts for over half of the EU’s energy demand. - Promote district energy systems, heat pumps, and energy efficiency. - Help households lower energy bills while supporting EU climate goals. What makes this campaign so powerful? It brings together policymakers, energy businesses, and civil society to focus on something that really matters: making heating affordable and sustainable. With support from several MEPs, it’s tackling big issues: cutting emissions, strengthening energy security, and helping families save on their bills. I'd really like to thank Aurélie Beauvais and her team for pushing it. Talking to her in November, it was impossible to miss how proud she was of this campaign. And it’s well-deserved. Buildings, buildings, buildings 🏚️ How will renovations help to lift millions of people out of energy poverty? Laia Segura Cueto spoke with FORESIGHT Climate & Energy this week to explain why EU decision makers must pull out all the stops to provide energy-efficient housing for citizens in order to tackle energy poverty. “Without public investment and targeted support, vulnerable households will continue to bear the brunt of the cost of living crisis. [..] we can all agree that 47 million Europeans living in energy poverty is 47 million too many, and the EU has a mandate to act and must end this scandalous situation. What we are doing is really looking towards the new commissioner to build a plan and pick up the right tools to make it happen. It will also be vital that the new commission sees how energy poverty and indecent housing connect to the climate crisis and focuses on delivering systemic and targeted solutions that not only lower energy bills but also provide decent homes for the most vulnerable.” 🎧 Listen to the full article here: https://lnkd.in/ecXd_V_4 #BuildBetterLives #EnergyPoverty #EnergyEfficiency #ClimateAction

18.5% of EU households can't keep their homes warm. This spike reverses a decade of progress and highlights a growing crisis where housing and energy poverty collide. 📊 The numbers are alarming: - 51.3%: Increase in EU house prices since 2015. - 54%: Rise in energy poverty indicators since 2021. - Low-income households spend more than 40% of their income on housing, often in homes that leak energy. Meanwhile, 3/4 of the EU buildings are inefficient. This isn’t just poverty. This isn't an energy crisis. It’s a RESILIENCE crisis. In my latest podcast episode, I spoke with Mónica Vidal, leader of CAN Europe’s Build Better Lives campaign, about real solutions: - Retrofitting inefficient homes to lower bills and emissions. - Turning vacant spaces into affordable housing. - Protecting tenants from "green gentrification" through balanced policies. The report highlights similar priorities, including: - Energy-efficient social housing retrofits. - Rent subsidies tied to energy upgrades. - Taxing speculative housing investments to fund climate-friendly projects. Housing - especially good housing - is at the heart of the energy transition. The clock is ticking. 📖 Read the report: https://lnkd.in/dgYVGcnz 🎧 Hear Monica’s insights: https://lnkd.in/d6H6FM-x Congratulations to Giorgos Koukoufikis and Erhan Özdemir, PhD, the report’s authors, for driving this critical conversation forward.
