And another follow-up - this time from the Clean Aviation Annual Forum #CAAF2025 at Palais Egmont in Brussels last week: The motto was ‘Mastering the Shift’. Being German I associated the title with something positive, ‘from apprentice to master’ - that must be progress 😊. But it quickly became clear that the #aviation #industry has a lot on its plate when it comes to the dual challenge of being ‘#climateneutral’ and ‘#competitive’. Especially as aircraft are not designed and built anew every year. Disruptive, climate-neutral technologies need a lead time: - Which new technologies and fuels (#hydrogen, #SAF, #electric...) will ultimately prevail? - How well or poorly is the #infrastructure, e.g. airports, prepared for this change? - How favourable are the framework conditions for #investment and risk-taking? - And with regard to too much bureaucracy: how much ‘#simplification of rules’ will the #EU actually implement - and how quickly? For a long time, European aviation has been successful. Now it's confronted with so many challenges that it's easy to lose track and forget what clean aviation is actually about. That's why I asked an apparently ‘’daft‘’ 😉 question in the Top Policy & Industry Panel: ‘’What has changed since the successes of the European aviation industry?" -- "The climate!’ was the immediate (and correct) answer. Thank you, Clean Aviation Joint Undertaking #CAJU for continuing to campaign for climate-neutral (and competitive) aviation. It was a great pleasure to be able to support you in this cause for one day. Thank you team #TMAB for your fantastic event organisation 😀

During my three-day visit to Brussels last week, I witnessed deep divisions between political forces, pulling in opposite directions—especially around the Green Deal. Meanwhile, Europe risks stagnation in its pursuit of competitiveness, energy security, and prosperity. For me, the only way to unite these opposing factions around a common goal is through Efficiency. Efficiency in resources and energy isn’t just about cutting consumption—it’s about getting more from less. It means higher profit margins, reduced waste and emissions, and a stronger economy. And that is in everybody’s best interest. Efficiency is often misunderstood, associated with saving. If you reduce your consumption, you are the only one to economically benefit from it, but you obtain less with less. If you are efficient, you reduce your costs, but you also stimulate the general prosperity by using efficient solutions that are developed, sold, and scaled by the industry. It’s a win-win-win: for businesses, for consumers, and for the environment. This is why efficiency must be better recognized and prioritised. ✈️ The aviation industry has voiced strong support for the Clean Aviation joint undertaking (JU), one of the EU research and development partnerships facing potential rationalisation under the next Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) starting in 2028. With European Commission officials considering changes to the structure of research and innovation funding, industry leaders, including influential MEP Christian Ehler, are calling for dedicated R&D funding in #FP10. The #aviation sector plays a crucial role in Europe’s #competitiveness, but with the challenge of drastically reducing its environmental footprint, companies are urging the Commission to recognise the sector’s unique needs.
