What's needed to kickstart CCS in Europe? 5 takeaways from CCS value chain actors: 1️⃣Legal certainty is needed along the full value chain Policy stability, clear permitting processes, and strong EU-national coordination are crucial to unlocking investments and accelerating CCS deployment. The role of the Industrial Decarbonisation Bank and national funding and de-risking instruments will be decisive. 2️⃣Financing is a key bottleneck The business case for CCS remains challenging, and financial mechanisms like Carbon Contracts for Difference (CCfDs) and the proposed European CCS Bank are needed to de-risk investments and provide long-term certainty. 3️⃣Technology is ready, but infrastructure must scale up While CCS technologies are proven, cross-border CO₂ transport and storage networks need further development. A coordinated European approach will be essential to build a robust infrastructure framework. 4️⃣Industry is ready to act Hard-to-abate sectors, including cement, chemicals, lime and steel are committed to CCS but need the right financial and regulatory incentives to move from initial development phase to full-scale deployment. 5️⃣Collaboration is essential CCS is a complex value chain: it requires cross-sector cooperation. Industry, finance, Governments, EU policymakers: we need to keep working together to turn ambition into reality. Yesterday we hosted a multistakeholder Workshop, with industry leaders, policymakers, civil society and financial experts to discuss how to accelerate CCS deployment in Europe. A huge thank you to all speakers and participants who joined us yesterday. 📢 As times change, so should our solutions.   We're against extending the gas storage target to Dec 2027. With the energy crisis behind us, unnecessary and rigid storage targets could 𝗲𝘅𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗿𝗯𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 and ultimately, 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘀 for European consumers. IOGP Europe recommends that:  ✔️ Regulation should leverage market efficiency and flexibility by not extending storage filling obligations, but if absolutely necessary:  🟢 Substantially lower overall filling targets, 🟢 Remove intermediary targets, and  🟢 Increase the minimum cross-border storage obligation for Member States without underground gas storage facilities.   ️ ✔️ An extensive impact assessment be made to understand the necessity and risks of prolonging the storage target that is based on gas demand, supply conditions & cost-benefit impact. 🤝 Instead of prescriptive EU-wide mandates, there should be more focus on regional coordination and market driven approaches that will preserve competitiveness and make energy more affordable for European consumers. 👇 Read our full position below ---------------------------------------------------------------     🛢 We are the European voice of the oil and gas industry.     📰 Interested in data, policy positions, discussions, trends, events, and more? 🔔 Give us a follow and ring it on our profile.

  • A week has passed since the European Commission proposed updates to EU Sustainability regulation. 🔎 Here’s what you should know: The 26 February Omnibus Package would bring significant changes to sustainability reporting, due diligence, and carbon border policies.  From easing reporting obligations to limiting due diligence scope, these proposed updates aim to balance sustainability goals with regulatory feasibility. 4 files would see important changes: 🔹 EU Taxonomy: Optional reporting for smaller companies, with more flexibility on alignment.  🔹 CSRD: Scope reduced to smaller companies, sector-specific reporting removed, and no transition to reasonable assurance.  🔹 CSDDD: Due diligence now limited to direct business partners, extended reassessment timeline, and removal of the EU-wide liability regime.  🔹 CBAM: Simplified reporting, extended deadlines, and a 50-tonne mass exemption ease administrative burdens and exempt 90% of importers from CBAM obligations The co-decision process with Parliament and Member States begins now, and we’ll be back with more updates.  --------------------------------------------------------------- 🛢 We are the European voice of the oil and gas industry. 📰 Interested in data, policy positions, discussions, trends, events, and more? 🔔 Give us a follow and ring it on our profile.
